Seen a lot of topics about the dreadful PGM battery. There are a lot of cool games on single PCB (Galuda, DOJ, Ketsui and Demon Front cause of the graphics). Never really got an answer of what the battery is really used for. So why not just desolder the battery instead of replacing?
Question: Is it just nessecary to set the clock? You can jumper the other settings with the dip switched on the board if i'm correct. So the only real reason to keep the battery alive is if you want the clock to be set and don't want to use the dip switches, Right?
PGM Battery question.

Re: PGM Battery question.
The battery is there to save the test menu setting but will work fine (fefaults on every boot up) with it removed. DOJ Black Label is an exception which also uses the battery to store a value in the NVRAM which is looked for on boot up. without that value the game will not boot.
Can't think of a reason to set the clock, maybe some games could have had time dependant variables.
The games can also be hacked to save high scores.

I must know about this high score saving, especially if it relates to Doj!

Oh, I thought this was common knowledge. I hacked my DOJ to save highscores. Not too difficult really, you just need to find the right hardware to perform the mod.
I haven't had a chance to try saving new scores on it yet.

Re: PGM Battery question.
All these replies, and still no mention of how this is done.
I'm assuming the battery is used to keep the SRAM alive while the board is powered on?
