Sega Naomi 1 Noob help?

Post by Ruby »

So i should probably start off the post by saying, I'm a beginner, First time getting into the whole arcade scene so i apologise in the long run. lol

In saying that though, i'm assuming this is where you would post this,

I've recently purchased a Sega Naomi 1 recently. It's barbones. no PSU, no IO/Jamma, no games, ect ect, I purchased it from a friend who've i've been going to for retro video games for little less then 10 years now (Since i was 6)
It turns on, boots, works, ect ect, no kinks with it, And he gave me some Eprom? chips for the region,
I've been looking on ebay and the prices for IO boards and stuff seem a little ridiculous. Almost 260 for the capcom IO, plus shipping which is another 72 dollars. Maybe i'm outta the loop and those are steals for sega naomi related hardware.
so i'm looking for some information on who's the best seller/place/ect to go to in terms of purchasing those things? Realistically all i need is a IO/PSU/NETDIMM and i should be ready to roar but i'd sooner not lose my lungs and kidneys in the process.

some inside information on the IO boards would be cool too. which one is the best, ect ect,

If you want to get stuff as cheap as possible and have patience try Yahoo auctions
But yeah it's still gonna be expensive, especially the netdimm

As for IO/psu it depends on your cab/supergun setup

Apologies i'm just getting around to seeing this now.

I don't have a cabinet/Supergun. though i would imagine a supergun would be the way to go until i can afford one. or a broken one happens to pop up somewhere near me.

And yeah i don't mind paying a good bit for the netdimm. it's just when it becomes overly crazy. there was a capcom IO board for almost 350 on ebay which seemed like a bit of a overkill.

Well to use the naomi you need:
Video out
Audio out
Controls in
Power in

Video is easy, the naomi outputs 31KHz or 15KHz from the VGA connector, just plug that into a display or upscaler
Audio is also easy 2 stereo RCA jacks for analogue audio

Controls will be more complicated, I'd get an arcade stick/panel and wire it up for jamma and connect that to either the Capcom or Sega JVS IO
Alternatively you can use a DC controller but compatibility is an issue AFAIK

For power you can get a JVS psu or some people have had luck adapting an ATX psu

Thing is i'm deathly scared of the ATX PSU putting a higher voltage then needed and then something blows up.

And yeah isn't there a Video/Audio inputs/outputs on the naomi itself? i assume that's what you meant.

As for controls. What kind of arcade stick would i get? Because i bought a bunch of parts on Amazon before i got the naomi that are just laying around. they were meant for a Raspi but i never got around to it. i would almost doubt that they'd be compatible with the naomi. So chances are i'd be buying a new one.

To clarify an atx psu can't just plug into a naomi, you need to make an adapter
As long as you connect the right pins from the atx psu to the naomi you shouldn't break anything, you can also get pre-made adapters I believe

Also yeah the video and audio are on the naomi itself, VGA from a dsub15 and analogue audio from twin rca connectors

As for controls, any buttons/stick and an enclosure will do. Just wire them up to a jamma connector and plug that into an io

I am also a naomi Noob. I just recieved a naomi mother board along with DOA2 today. I dont have a power supply or any sort of jamma. This is my first piece of arcade hardware i've purchased and I am extreamly confused after trying to watch tutorials on how to get these things set up.

I keep seeing people plug vga cables into jamma io converters and i have no idea how that connects to a monitor after that.
I also see the same problem with power supplies, I have no idea how they plug any of these wires into walls.

could anyone help me with the anatomy of these machines before i start buying more parts?

I'd really appreciate it.

A starting point is to buy a Supergun, a device for playing JAMMA boards on your TV. You will then need a converter for playing JVS hardware such as Naomi on it. The Capcom I/O probably best suits your needs. That's your controls sorted. You can switch the dip switch on the Naomi to 15KHz to output to your TV through the supergun in low res, or switch to 31KHz and connect the VGA cable direct. Similarly, the Capcom I/O will output mono audio to the supergun and your TV or you can plug the Naomi's line level output into an amplifier for stereo.

This leaves power. The supergun might work with a Naomi cartridge system but you will definitely need a separate power supply with 3.3V output if you want to use GD ROM. Either an arcade JVS PSU or an ATX PC PSU with the right cabling as mentioned above.

What kind of supergun should I be looking out for? The ones I keep seeing are $500 and up and have neo geo controller ports on them. Also any other place in particular that i should be looking at (besides ebay)?

Any would work, but you do get what you pay for, and if you're planning to get balls deep in the hobby, something Japanese like the Sigma ones are worth the investment. Something with 6 button controllers and a CPS2 kick harness would mean you could play 6 button Naomi games via the Capcom I/O without needing to do any custom wiring for the extra buttons.
