Naomi with CD-R

Post by invzim »

What's so bad about this?

I had to go through the trouble of finding company that did resurfacing of optical discs to get a pricey GD-ROM game to work, and would like to avoid that in the future. Someone argues about piracy, but I don't buy this since you still need a security key, also these games are already playable in nulldc - so I don't really see the big deal. The companies that made these games certainly will not have their quarterly financial statements affected by enthusiasts having backups.

For those that don't know, you can run cd-r copies on naomi. The procedure involves changing the DIMM firmware, and making a CD-R like you would with a Dreamcast.

So what do you think ppl?

Problem is the key chip can be duplicated as well.

copied disc and copied key chip = illegal copy

Problem is you can decrypt the gd-rom to use another key chip, so you can make all the CD-R copies use Sports Jam sec chip, which is also a big no-no.

There will be a GD-ROM - Solid state replacement solution soon, which is good for operators, but all I know is most operators are not buying anything GD-ROM based due to the lack of support. Thats why I wanted to make sure I could at least support the operators out there with GD-ROM hardware.

I'm in two minds about this, with the Dreamcast, I downloaded the odd game now and then to check if I wanted it, before going and buying it later, and the ability to do so with the Naomi would be quite nice too. Also being able to keep the games on the shelf and just run the backups would be quite a nice option.

In the long run though, I think it would send up the price of hardware, as every Tom, Dick and Harry with a 10 quid supergun or a cheap woodie goes out and buys a naomi, and also software would slightly de-value, as it becomes much easier to obtain as people stop buying originals.

You would still need a complete setup with GD-drive and DIMM, which is a lot more than 10bucks. Also, the procedure of getting the firmware installed is not trivial (surface mount tsop48/tsop56) - and with nulldc already running naomi pretty good, I don't see this happening.

De-value of (second hand) software, probably, but I don't regard that as a bad thing. Devaluation is of course dependent on someone making re-encrypted images, or copied PIC's available.

You all ready get some dodgy ops using DC in cabs with an MGCD. I've seen them myself.

I don't see the big deal with this. If its enthusiast using them in the home, but this harks back to my views on Mame / boots/ Multi carts discussed in the other thread.

It's been pointed out that this is illegal & breach of copyright regardless to you owning the original, but if I could, I would be running Naomi CDRs,

I'd stiill also be buying originals but I'll like to see some of the oddites running to see if they are worth the money.

Pirating worthless console stuff (& porn ;) is one thing, but I say no thanks to arcade copies.

How can they charge for them though? Is it on some kind of time-based/arcade entry thing?

You can have them on time or credit mode (the latter is on supported by some games)

Just build a DC to Jamma adapter and buy the console ports.

Thats what I do when I cannot afford a Naomi game.

Got a couple of PM's, but this is public knowledge by now - it is indeed possible, and I've spoken to people that have done it.

Anybody that wants the patched dimm firmware, needs to e-mail El Semi, as he was the guy who did it..

I won't be supplying CD-Rs, Debug Dimms, I know people want to use them for "personal use", but it isn't something I want to get into. I know operators want a solution to the GD-ROM nightmare, so I think we will end up with a solid state solution before the end of the year.. It's just having the equipment to make people take a copy of the own GD-ROM disc and convert it to a different media.

Just out of interest; what is that "GD nightmare" you are talking about?
Is it something about a lack of long term reliability?

GDRom production stopped last year. Once the stock of replacement parts dries up, you're on your own for fixing a busted GD-drive.

Think so?

Shooters, for sure.

Fighters, ehh thats a tough call.

Shmups, NO WAY.

Sports, definately.

Regardless, it'd be nice if there were SOME sort of solution for us home collectors. I'm beginning to fear that I one day will no longer be able to enjoy my GD library.

shooters are same as most do cart and gd

fighters il edge with cart myself

shumps 100% agree better by a mile

sports both same because only tennis 2 was any good

but you forgot drivers all good on gd man

there 2 things wrong with problems here 1 they should be free if the not going to supply spares its just greed with sega not allowing them to copy cd rs
and 2 why do the operators still have to pay crazy prices for stuff that can picked at less than half i think the likes of sega and agents wont mention names making a packet for £10 cds and a chip the arcade biz would still be going only for these guys they fooooked themselfs where talking about hardware and software thats been upgraded 4 or 5 times since and they still wanna rape us ,bring on the bootlegs ,rant over

Out of the systems, I'd say Chihiro is the reason why GD-ROM products still get sold.

I don't think Operators give 2 hoots about Sports Jam, but games like Outrun 2/2SP, VCop3/HOTD3/Ghost Squad, Max Tune 1 and 2, still are fairly big, and still go quite high in the trade.
