Silly questions #1 - What is a POP?
So, forgive the noobish question, but I've been wondering this for ages... and what with selling a bunch of artwork off today, I'm really, REALLY wondering.
What the hell *is* a POP (that you get in PCB kits, e.g. from Cave)? What is it used for in an actual arcade, and where does the name come from...?
I'm sure it is something really obvious and I'll exclaim "D'oh!" when I'm told...

Pop-up art work I think it means. Basically the cardboard cutouts and sticky bits and bats that are separate from the marquee and movestrips in some kits.

Also, they're not unique to arcade games. Many console games have demo pops which shop keepers decorate their stores with.

yeah that's what I've heard. thchardcore referred to my alpha3 extra artwork bits (the little player1 & player2 cards) as pops.Flazh wrote:Pop-up art work I think it means. Basically the cardboard cutouts and sticky bits and bats that are separate from the marquee and movestrips in some kits.
Apparently they're the sort of things that don't survive for long and are worth a few quid.
Oops, just remembered I still owe him money.

Yes, it comes from Point Of Purchase advertising, as far as I can tell from consulting Japanese dictionaries etc.SuperPang wrote:Point Of Purchase?

Point of Presence. Its the industry term in telephony and computer networking to the place inside or outside the building where services are provided to you. In the United States, this point marks the line between customer and utility responsiblity.
as used in a sentence:
"Wheres the POP for that new T1 Line?"
"Those Verizon ***holes installed it in the boiler room. We're going to have a hell of a time getting a clean signal out of there"

It's Point of Presence in networking, but Point of Purchase in this case. Check out POP School:

Re: Silly questions #1 - What is a POP?
Kind of, but generally when we talk about POS we think of some kind of electronic scanning/updating of the inventory/clubcard kind of deal, with POP in Japan we think of advertising boards, flags, banners etc. inside or outside shops. Usually featuring Rilakkuma, Miffy, or Kitty-chan. And there's always some kind of "campaign" going on. Basically, a POPs advertise what you can buy in the very location you can buy it.
