Sophie's Choice! What would you do?

Post by o1s1n »

Right lads, I've a bit of a decision to make, any input would be appreciated.

I currently have an SNK Candy 25 and a Jaleco Pony III.

Both have had cap kits done in the last 6-7 years so are good to go for a while to come. Both are absolute minters, the Pony was resprayed before I bought it and the SNK candy has it's original paint, barely any chips.

Have had them both almost ten years, love them both equally.

Which would you keep?

The Pony is obviously worth more than the SNK, but the SNK really is gorgeous and a cabinet I wanted for years.

Whichever cabinet is being kept will have a MiSTer installed instead of arcade boards and the monitor set horizontally.

I keep flip flopping, help!

My OCD gets triggered when I see people using Neo cabs for anything other than NeoGeo hardware.

Control panel is more versatile too on the Pony.

I'd keep the Pony. It has a flush CP, more comfortable to play on, and it's overall smaller with less wasted space. I know you've said hori forever but... It can tate too.

The SNK is stereo

Keep SNK for Neogeo. The Pony looks sweet but is horrible to play on imo. Only keep if space REALLY is an issue. Doesn't look like a problem here.
Or sell both and buy yourself a nice NAC and a few great pcb's.

Thanks dudes! Yeah you're all confirming more or less what I was thinking myself alright, part of me wants to retain the SNK for Neo stuff (I've a mountain of MVS carts) but there's something about that low profile of the Pony that's just inching it for me. It's a little bit more contemporary looking in the room too with it's angles..Plus I'd never be able to afford another one again !

Sell both, get an E2.

You'll not like the E2 as much as either of the two you have at the moment. As a cab, the E2 is a bit of a skank, but you can't beat the rotate mech.

Keep both and in a few weeks wonder why you thought about giving either up.

The Candy 25 have a rotate mech too, right? No problem for me to play other games than Neo on the SNK. Akai Katana or Ibara Kuro also with 4 button settings 👌 and the Neo Panel ist gorgeous. SNK built the nicest cabs imo. Keep both

Classic burnt out syndrome, sell it all and get out of the hobby for a while.. having a bunch of nice original stuff and going backwards to a multisolution is only going to furrther kill your passion..

If you're getting out, you need to be sure you're getting out for good because as you mentioned, prices are only going one way.

Not necessarily, you dont have to own everything to enjoy the hobby fully, im very fortunate to have the stuff i have (and i worked hard for it), but i think id be just as happy with one cab and 3-4 of my favourite boards and that would be it.

I think a little soulsearching and abstinence from time to time is healthy in all things in life.

And yeah boards are expensive and prices are going up but its very rarely money spent, its a pretty nice hobby that way.

I think the current market makes it all that bit easier to live with and come to a decision.

As much as I would like a pony, the candy is way more iconic. It also looks to be in amazing condition!
