Shoot em up noob - game advice! :D
Ok folks, I am new to shooting games like the CAVE titles etc.
I currently play...
Zero Gunner 2 and Under Defeat in my cabs via Dreamcast
I want to make my New Astro City into a vert shooting cab.
I am hunting down Tiger Heli and have played a little Air Gallet and really liked that to, so I might try and track that down aswell.
But basically, what I am after is a short of beginners guide to vert shooting games (and hori game too!) but I dont want anything expensive like DeathSmiles etc.
I am looking to spend £130-150 max on a PCB to be honest as all the games I really like I already own or are alot cheaper than that!
cheers
Adam

a good place to start would be http://www.world-of-arcades.net
it covers psikyo, raizing, and cave games (up to 2005 - so missing the newer expensive stuff). if you've got a naomi setup i'd recommend ikaruga. for low-res cave stuff espgaluda would be a great game to start out with. it's not too dear, looks great, not too challenging (even my missus plays it ), and loose boards often pop up for sale
or just get ketsui

I had a quick go on dodonpachi on MAME and it seemed pretty good.
Never played espgaluda.
Any thoughts on Air Gallet? I think it plays pretty well

I say this every time
Armed Police Batrider.
It's one of the best shmups ever made & it's not soul destroying. You can clear Normal with a little practice. After that there years of depth to it, tons of ships, hidden bosses.......
after that
DoDonPachi
Esp Galuda
Esp Rade
They are all within your budget.

Re: Shoot em up noob - game advice! :D
I should point out.
I REALLY like helicopters in games, and then plans.
But there is something I can quite gel with woth soe of these fancy games with the 'ship' being a human!
I currently have only 'sampled' these games via MAME.
Tiger Heli is a game I grew up with (on my NES) so I want that for the fact I loked it when I was young!
After playing some of these games via mame, I came to the conclusion that the games that stood out most for me were.....
Armed Policed Batrider
Strikers 1945 II
Air Gallet
Tiger Heli
Sort of liked dodonpachi

You'll probably tire of Air Gallet quite quickly. It's a good game but there's plenty better. Fortunately it's not common so would move on to another shooter collector without much trouble.
There are four verts I want to own indefinitely. Raiden DX (got), Psyvariar Revision (got), DoDonPachi (had twice and sold twice ), and Armed Police Batrider. Old school, buzz, danmaku, and manic.
Really can't recommend Raiden DX enough. It's brutally satisfying, and an incredible amount of game for the money.
Oh, and you can't play it in MAME

Yeah, part of the fun with a game for me is the setting. War or cyber punks gets my vote. People with magic powers and wings not so boner erecting!
Any views on Air Gallet?

Go for early Cave or Raizing......
Dodonpachi
EspGaluda
Battle Garegga
AP Batrider
Garegga is about the most pricey at ~ £200
personally i'd track down a Dodonpachi and see how you like it...... the 2 I have that rarely leave the cabs are Garegga and DDP the depth in these 2 alone will keep me going for ever..

I really recomend IBARA, it is not crazy expensive and it plays great! One of my favourites. It is much like Battle Garegga.

On the other hand, it's ridiculously marmite. My first pcb, and I only played it twice. Then I traded it with kernow for Donpachi and play that all the timeDarthBoMan wrote:I really recomend IBARA, it is not crazy expensive and it plays great! One of my favourites. It is much like Battle Garegga.

My first (shooter) PCB, and I've played it hundreds of times. Especially since it was only £100.Dandy_Sephy wrote:My first pcb, and I only played it twice.
I'd recommend Espgaluda if you are wanting to get into Cave. And I feel the need to pimp Flying Shark/Hishou Same/Sky Shark if you are looking for a bit of oldschool Toaplan lovin'.

i'm not a fan of ibara ..yet .mebbes one day it will click. i just think the second level and boss are far too brutal for a second level.

charlie, you just need the right strats definitely a game where you need to see a couple of replays to get how everything works.
while we're pimping, how about indulging yourself in a Pink Sweets kit..?

Re: Shoot em up noob - game advice! :D
You can breeze L2 boss if you take to Hados into the fight.
It's actually not "that" hard a fight if the rank is low, but Jesus H Christ is tough if you go into it wrong.
I agree that it's too tough for a L2 boss, but Ibara is too tough all over.
Edit: or 2 Pink Sweets kit's. one for play the other for storage
