Awesome article. I wish we had the same culture here in America. Minus Galloping Ghost, all of the Chicago arcades are just "barcades', with the same 10-20 games available. It's like everyone rushed out and bought a Pac-Man and Donkey Kong cab and that was the end of it

I can tell you that some parts of America, like East and SF Bay Area in California, have thriving arcade cultures. High Scores, in Alameda and Hayward, is the only arcade that offers all-ages video-game only amusement in hourly or all day passes. The big majority are arcade bars, filled with similar catalog and then some big indie names (Killer Queen and Cosmotrons). And then finally, there are some places that have a few arcade games for street locations such as restaurants, pool tables, bowling alleys and occasionally laundromats. Times will change when the new set of affordable arcade hardware comes in, and Game not Over will prevail beyond Japan.
