Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
What happend to this thread? I thought it was pretty interesting. The 161-in-1 is missing alot of games so this would make sense if you want EVERY neo game.
Also I wouldn't this call this an MVS emulator, that implies it's the same as Mame etc, which it clearly isn't. Flash carts are not emulation, they're more mass-storage devices than anything.

Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
To be fair flash carts have always been cart emulators - the bus logic needs to be emulated and such. So while Ross is technically correct I don't see the point in pointing it out in this case. There are no gameplay implications from cart emulation like there are for instance with products like the Everdrive N8 which emulate on-cart sound chips which produce analogue audio output and will never sound 100% accurate to real hardware.
On-topic though I think the price is way too high compared to existing MVS multi-cart solutions. I guess the only market for it is people who want to play a specific region/revision of a game, people who don't want to pay through the nose to play NG-DEV games, and homebrew developers.

Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
Both this and MAME satisfy the same objectives (from punter's point of view) in ostensibly the same way, that is by emulated hardware.
The difference is the PC costs a fraction of the NeoSD.
If you aren't running the original hardware, as intended, what does this bring to the table? Convenience? Are there €379 worth of MVS carts the average person wants to own, that can't be covered with a £30-£50 multi cart?

Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
False on both accounts. MAME introduces input lag, and setting up a system which is accurate to the point of offering JAMMA level audio and video at 15KHz with CRT_Emudriver you're going to be spending quite a bit more than €350 not to mention the hours spent putting it all together and setting up the software.Rossyra wrote:Both this and MAME satisfy the same objectives in ostensibly the same way, that is by emulated hardware.

Cart emulation != full system emulation. 1-slots are cheap and offer authentic responsiveness and audio/video fidelity when used with a flash cart or multi cart. MAME was never a viable alternative imho. The one point you are right on however is the one already voiced by Jan, and me; why buy this when a multi-cart offers more or less the same at a much more attractive price.

input lag
Read 'punter' and 'average person'
I completely disagree with you on cost and effort of setting up CRT_emudriver, old ATI cards can be had for a tenner, rest of the PC as much or little as you want.

Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
The previous multi-carts play hacked up roms that function close to the originals. The games mostly work, but even on the 120/160 multicaarts there are all sorts of glitches in a handful of the games (important ones too, Garou, Blazing Star), and the sound is crap compared to the legit carts. Not too mention the multis are all missing loads of key games that are now going for obscene prices ($250 for windjammeres, was $40 a few years ago)
This new gizmo should play ALL the neo games 1:1 like the original carts.

Which just makes it sound like even more of a cash-in, like we didn't have enough of that.

Re: NeoSD - I'm loving it
The only way to get input lag close to real hardware is to use GroovyMAME and meticulously tweak the frame_delay parameter for each game.cools wrote:I thought this had been thoroughly disproven, provided it was set up correctly?mufunyo wrote:MAME introduces input lag

Close? Come on, 1 frame? Or to put it another way 1/60th of a second on default settings.
