2 New videos added to the main post, a horizontal video featuring the following games : Aliens, Golden Axe, Nemesis, Robocop, Moonwalker, Pacland, R Type, R Type 2 & The Simpsons and a vertical video featuring, 1942, Commando, DoDonPachi, Flying Shark, Juno First, Pacman, Scramble, Raiden, Slap Fight, Terra Cresta and Varth, apologies the video has been rotated rather than go to the hassle of turning my monitor around its not a great video but you can get an idea of how the vertical games run (ive also do a few close ups of the edges in the videos to show theres no screen tearing), the advancemenu config file has been changed to rotate the menu and MAME4ALL is doing the screen rotation, also I have managed to find a working shader for FBA and MAME 078 so screen brightness can now be changed for all emulators via the software.

Do the games run at native resolution?

Hey mark why dont you just get a new PC case and a SSD drive and clone it so you can keep your current GM set up? that way you can keep your set up make it probably 50 times faster and tidy it up with the new case and stick it inside your cab

what specs are your PC btw ? if its a 775 skt you can get a E8500 dual core CPU now for about £12 and a 120GB SSD for £30

Whoops I didn't see this post. Yeah I need to do something, my PC is a bit bulky sat next to the cab and it takes forever to boot. From memory its a core2duo 2.4ghz with 2 gig of ram and running XP. What would I be looking at price-wise if I mounted a new mb and all the bits? I'm assuming I can still use the same gfx-card?

I wouldn't get a new MB , id upgraded the CPU to a E8500 get a matching 2GB of ram to make a total of 4GB ram or a new 4GB stick and get a SSD drive and clone it. That way it would be a pretty cheap upgrade and the PC would be flying speed wise.

You could keep your GPU and wouldn't need to mess around with any set up. Also ive Overclocked my CPU for even more speed.

Is the board a MATX ? if so it would fit into a nice small tidy case with a MATX PSU.

Imo you have the ultimate set up with GM already, you just need to make it faster and tidier.

Hey Ex_Mosquito,
It was your explanation of Groovymame in an old thread here that encouraged me to build a machine a year or so ago. Like you, it sat next to the cab.
I've just switched to a Windows 7 64bit set up, still with the HD4350 (low profile one, flashed with Atom 15), using 'super resolutions' and groovymame 0.158... but now in a mini tower (Dell Optiplex E7400 C2D 4gb ram). It sits inside the NAC (same as yours) very nicely and i'm playing games in < 1 min. In the bios, I've set it to power on when power is restored... So I never have to go in the cab (which is in my 7yr old's room, lucky boy). Just a standard HDD, would be seriously quick with a little SSD in there. Shuts down in about 10 seconds.

Raspi does 15khz over hdmi, 240p and custom modes even. It's really neat.

You can buy it here from the user dee2eR. It was AU$225 delivered to Switzerland.

Nice to see the Rasp 3 released, but on the other hand it sucks. I just bought this Rasp2 kit

Yeah Groovy won't work on a Pi without some radical code changes. The way the RaspberryJAMMA works is through config.ini editing which changes the display mode for everything including boot, console, and X11. Custom modes work but you'd need a way to automate setting them for each game before launching MAME.

Sounded great when I first saw this, then I noticed it's transcoding the HDMI to analog which probably means lots of lag. So emulator lag + HDMI -> Analog lag and on top of that it's probably not outputting the correct refresh rate as the game so you even get screen tearing I bet.

For $230 AUS, PASS.

Well mufunyo said the R-Pi can output 15khz and from what I've read the R-Pi can output VGA through the HDMI connector. So I don't see how that is emulator lag + HDMI -> Analog lag. If the R-Pi is outputting analog RGB through the HDMI port for VGA and the hardware can indeed output a 15khz signal then I don't see it being any more laggy than a PC with a CRT running an emulator.

As far as screen tearing, I thought someone in this thread mentioned this didn't appear to have that problem unlike certain other multi-game emulation boards that are sold.

Yeah the Pi outputs the right mode digitally through HDMI, and the VGA converter adds no lag (it's literally just a DA converter). I do agree that the price is a bit steep, especially considering it doesn't even include a video amp for proper JAMMA levels, and has to be shipped from Australia.

What makes you think just because it's a digital to analog converter it has no lag??? It has to process the signal and would need to frame buffer AT LEAST 1 frame, this looks like some cheap Chinese one so I don't think it'd be that fast. It looks like some off the shelf part tacked on to the board so should be easy to pick up the spec sheet if you know the model. At $230 + the price of a Pi 2/3 I'd still rather just build my own system with a JPAC, it'd come out to a little bit more, probably $300, but I wouldn't have to worry about not running groovy MAME or having that horrible cropping that was on the capture recordings in those Youtube videos.

Sorry but clearly you know very little about integrated circuits or video signals. DVI/HDMI is just pixel data with a clock, what do you think is cheaper, an IC that buffers an entire frame or an IC that just pumps out pixels? These things are $15 exactly because there is no frame buffer, just the most basic signal conversion the designer could get away with. But go ahead, measure the lag if you want, you won't find any.

That's what the original SwitchRes tool did/does http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.p ... msg1438711

(You give it a ROM name and monitor preset, it asks MAME what res the game uses, switches to a suitable resolution then launches MAME).

You're still stuck with older ARM compatible versions of MAME and the (minor, but verifiable) lag introduced by using Linux, but I'd assume SwitchRes would allow native modes to work without issue on this board.
