Your Fave Arcade Platformers.
After seeing Ex_Mosquito's 1 credit play through thread (which is great, I love your videos), it got me thinking that I hardly know any arcade platform games.
I own (and love) Spin Master and Top Hunter on the Neo Geo, and apart from the obvious G&G etc seeing some of these games in the videos that people here seem familair with, got me thinking that there are a whole load of great games that have completely passed me by.
So, what are your favourite arcade platformers? I want to get a list going and then try and find some pcbs (why do I get the feeling that I'll never find any for sale).

Re: Your Fave Arcade Platformers.
Magical Cat Adventure. Because it was about the only true platformer I worked on the emulation for. It has a reasonable pace and feels pretty sonic-y, and good looking to boot. Just missing some of the vertical and varied routes.
Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story are pretty obvious (the former's diamond collecting adds a dimension, the latter has so many hidden routes and levels and cool boss fights), but I like Liquid Kids a lot too for Taito action.
Snow Bros is a good modern riff on Bubble Bobble.
I have fond memories of watching Wonder Boy in Monster Land too.

Snow Bros is great, and really very cheap for the quality of the game too. Liquid Kids is an excellent Taito platformer you might have missed, I can also recommend Bionic Commando, and Wonderboy in Monsterland is a good long game to play through and is more like a console game than an arcade game really so great for home play on a cab. I also like Blue's Journey on MVS, it's the Neo Geo mario game I guess.

I liked Ganryu on Neo Geo. Charlie Ninja is another interesting one, but it leans very heavily on the action side of things and doesn't have that much actual platforming.

Lots of good stuff suggested here, thanks guys.
I have liquid kids on the PCE, love the look of Magical Cat and Recalhorn.
I'd completely forgotten about blue's journey!

If you guys like Snow Brother (which i also love) you should check Tumblepop from Data East. It's a cheap funny little game.

PACLAND
This game doesn't get enough love. It's arguably the first scrolling platform game, and it happens to be awesome. It doesn't follow typical Platform Game traditions because it's from a time when there were none. It's frantic (you have to quickly tap run to build up speed) and it's very challenging. I absolutely love the art style. It's best played with no joystick, just buttons.

Re: Your Fave Arcade Platformers.
there's very few side scrolling action games w/ gravitiy that heavily rely on jumping mechanics that I know of for arcades.
ignoring that criteria, my favorites are:
Strider Hiryu
Magician Lord
Black Dragon
Psychic 5

Strider is my favourite arcade platformer. Honourable mention goes to Magician Lord as well, awesome Neo Geo game and a real coin sucker for me when I was younger.

Strider looks amazing, heard of it before, but never seen it in action until just now.
Not sure about the sequel mind.

As well as the official Strider 2 on PSX/ZN hw there's a 2D pseudo-sequel known as Osman / Cannon Dancer by the same director, but published by Mitchell.bloodhokuto wrote:Strider looks amazing, heard of it before, but never seen it in action until just now.

There's also a modern followup/remake released in the past 6 months on PC and consoles which had some great reviews. Just waiting for the price to come down. http://store.steampowered.com/app/235210/"

Re: Your Fave Arcade Platformers.
"Platformer" is a kind of vague term, as something like Snow Brothers, is different from Rainbow Islands, from Donkey Kong, from Willow etc..
For arcade adventures that feature a LOT of platforming, i'd go for:
1)Ghosts'n'Goblins
2)TNZS
3)Wardner
For ones's that feature more shooting
1)Willow
2)Karnov
3)Legend of Hero Tonma
For ones that feature more melee/brawling
1)Rastan
2)Strider
3)Rygar
For fixed screen platformers
1)Donkey Kong
2)Bombjack - is this a platformer?
3)Snow Bros
