Shadow Dancer - The Megadrive version. I really didn't think too much of the original arcade version but I used to love the Megadrive one.

Actually, Doom would have worked. Certainly far more than any other FPS. It's fast to begin, has a focused simple goal, attention grabbing, and digital controls are fine. It was made in a time of arcade mentality, and is designed to be best experienced as standalone levels with no item carry-over - which is sadly lost on home players due to the save feature. A go this way lasts 5 to 30 minutes.EllertMichael wrote:I'm still surprised there was never a legit DOOM arcade...

I guess all Doom needs is a time limit and a scoring system?
Alley Cat would have become huge if it had been released in the arcades.

Alleycat (atari 8 bit), Axelay (SFC), Bruce Lee (Speccy version), Wipeout (pc) have all made it so far.
I'm compiling a big list of listeners picks and working out a bunch of our own to talk about on the podcast.
Keep 'em coming! - Even some of the new pc games would have been awesome. Especially a bunch of the twin stick shooters, like Geometry wars and the like (love the music in that game)

Have to agree with Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (there are bootleg PCBs out there of course).
How about Star Fox? Decap Attack? Castle of Illusion?

Would have been nice to see any Thalamus title ported to the arcades...a complete catalogue of high quality titles!

Like Namco's Starblade or "just" the console version with a credit system?

Had no idea this existed!! Pretty cool. Just watched a bit of a video of it.
It looks great (could well be how it’s emulated in the video of course), but it’s clearly not as ‘fun’ as Star Fox…

Atari kinda made Doom for the arcade with WAR , pretty cool game with wasd controls and an analog joystick to aim. You could also link a bunch of cabs up for multiplayer...

I had the luck of playing it once. At the time it was pretty awesome; but of course nothing compared to SF64.ChrisBEANS wrote: ↑May 16th, 2022, 5:17 pm Had no idea this existed!! Pretty cool. Just watched a bit of a video of it.

Re: What games shoulda / woulda be in the arcade?
Downwell would have fit nicely thanks to short play bursts that would naturally result in credit feeding to bet better. There should be more expanded content for arcade version to convince me to play it though.

Re: What games shoulda / woulda be in the arcade?
Watching a YouTube clip won’t really do it justice as the arcade cab had a gigantic lens over the monitor which gave the whole thing a really cool sensation of depth.ChrisBEANS wrote: ↑May 16th, 2022, 5:17 pm Had no idea this existed!! Pretty cool. Just watched a bit of a video of it.

Agree that in gameplay comparison it’s not as good as SF. Played it recently at AC, time hasn’t been kind.
If you were brought up on the Last Starfighter though, that cab was pretty incredible at the time.
Astro City is only a letter away from atrocity. Makes you think doesn’t it?

So many... On top of my head, what I wish were in the arcades instead of consoles are Samurai Pizza Cats (a beat 'em up version), Battle Mania Daiginjo, and ALESTE: MUSHA.

Re: What games shoulda / woulda be in the arcade?
I was playing the Road Rash 2 remastered Megadrive Rom on MiSTercade the other day in one of my cabinets and it actually works really well as an arcade game.
