Sorry, aren't they both SH-2? Can you clarify which you mean here?

Sorry, I usually refer to the standard SH-2 modded carts as an 'SH-2 cart'. Yes, they are both SH-2 chips but Capcom used a proprietary custom version. Swapping the custom version with a standard, well-known variety allows the games to be played in their pure state since the bios can be more easily programmed to be used in conjunction with the standard SH-2.

So to clear things up a bit:

In our internal memos, Darksoft and I refer to the unmodded CPS3 carts as the 'Custom version' and the carts modified with a standard SH-2 as the 'Standard or SH2 version'. Hope that clears it up a bit!

Big thanks to all involved in making this possible. I've just got my "dead" Third Strike cart back from Joerg @ arcademodbios and it is working great. I would definitley recommend him to anyone in Europe :awe:

Yep! Joerg will take care of you if you just want the bios changed. He won't change the SH-2 for you though. I'm glad to help any European members get that done. Got one from France today as a matter of fact. :)

So for a layman like myself, how would I go about getting a cps3 set up to play these six games? Would the SF3.3 sets Mo sells on eBay work?

Not sure what sets your talking about. Got a link?

Basically any CPS3 setup with enough SIMMS to play 3S will work. Two 64mb SIMMS and four 128mb SIMMS.

If I ever have any extra motherboards to sell I'm sure I will put together a whole package. But considering how hard it is to find motherboards and SIMMS right now, it probably won't sell very cheaply...unfortunately

Okey,

Noob to CPS3 here.

If I wanted to get this set up (have a CPS3 with no battery and all the games etc), which full kit would I need to buy first?

- I understand that some of the carts won't do? I was hoping to get a New Generation or Second Impact.

Anywhoo, I buy the suitable kit (cd drive, motherboard & cart).

Then send the cart to ... someone (any recommends for the UK?) to do the chip swapping etc.

Get the CD from darksoft and away I go?

I'm not sure how the SH2 thing works, is there two ways of going about this?

Can I buy a dead cart and resurrect it?

If you want to use the SuperBIOS or the SuperBIOS + SH2 swap any cart will work. I do the conversion but I don't like to kill live carts. People send me live carts sometimes and I usually just swap them with one of my carts and try to trade the live one away to a collector. But I have a handful of live JOJO carts that I can't seem to give away..... They might get sacrificed :(

You must make sure that your motherboard has enough SIMMS to play Third Strike. That's four 128mb SIMMS and two 64mb SIMMS. A SuperBIOS cart will not boot without the proper SIMM count.

I have done quite a few conversions for European collectors. Almost as many as for US/Canadian collectors so far. There is no official person to do the SH2 swap in Europe but if you just want the custom version of the SuperBIOS, then pornhub.com/gayporn and swap that for you. He will not do the SH2 though. I am happy to do it for you however. $150 plus return shipping (about $26 for USPS to Europe). There are a few European members on this forum that will vouch for my work. I send a BETA copy of the CD when I do a conversion. The Super Final version of the disk will be sent to anyone who has donated to Darksoft or if you wait it out it will be available for download at a later date. The disk comes in a custom case and has a custom CD label. (Standard SH2 version is done)

The standard SH2 version is the best way to go. Only 2I required encryption tables to run. Whereas with the custom Capcom SH2 version all games required encryption tables except 2I. Encryption tables are prone to have some errors and can cause some crashes and freezes. That's why the standard SH2 version is best. 5 of the 6 games run exactly how capcom intended without using tables. The custom versions are very good and play pretty well but it is always possible that more errors will be found when more people play and try new moves, etc. In fact, now that the standard SH2 version of the CD is complete, Darksoft is working on completing the custom versions now. I just received a new version of JOJO to test :)

Yes, a dead cart is best to convert. I don't want to kill live carts.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks for your response.

OK, so I need to make sure that my motherboard has enough space - however was there any rationale as to which game came with which motherboard?

I guess the later games had better spec motherboards? Guess the only way to be certain is to ask the seller?

I am still a little confused re the practical difference superbios fix v SH2 chip swap.

Is it;

Superbios - just negates suicide battery.

SH2 - above plus I can run all CPS3 games.

Any motherboard will work as long as it has enough SIMMS. There are different revisions of the motherboard but functionally they are all the same.

There are two different versions of the SuperBIOS. Both negate the battery and allow you to play all games (SH2 version now, custom soon):

Custom version---allows you to play any game from a single cart and CD. Prone to errors due to the use of encryption tables. Though most games play well already. Only 2I does not use encryption tables and therefore will work flawlessly.

Standard SH2 version---can play 5 of the 6 games without encryption tables so there will be no errors in those games. Only 2I uses encryption tables and therefore *may* have a few errors to fix. Not likely though.

I have done only 3 or 4 custom versions and around 40 standard SH2 swaps so far. It is more expensive due to the time and skill involved but in the long run it is the best way to go if you can justify the cost.

More questions? Ask away!!

Thanks again!

I got myself confused, but you have clarified it for me.

Now the only question I really have is for myself - can I justify buying a perfectly good CPS3 kit and killing it to run this hack, it does seem a little off - though capcom did send all of these out to die in the first place with the suicide nonsense.
