Popularity of candy cabinets today
I'm new to the whole arcade scene and to owning candy cabinets. Its only been a little over a week since I got my first one.
However, I am curious to know if there are any of you old timers who have a feeling about the current state of popularity of japanese arcade games and cabinets?
How did it look 5, 10 or 15 years ago? Has there been an increase or decline in popularity?
Does anyone dare to guess how many candy cabinets are out there in the homes of people e.g. in Europe (or the US)?

In the US at least, I've found that candy cabs are more in abundance on the West coast than the East coast. On the other hand, the West coast is significantly closer to Japan.

I think a lot buy them, play them for a bit and the either break or never get played on and then they can't be bothered to take it apart or advertise and most just sit about catching dust while they tell there friend the have an arcade machine at home!

There's not a hope that mine will gather dust. I've wanted one since the first time I stepped into an arcade.Svovl wrote:That's a depressing thought!tetsujin wrote:I think a lot buy them, play them for a bit and the either break or never get played on and then they can't be bothered to take it apart or advertise and most just sit about catching dust while they tell there friend the have an arcade machine at home!

the "hardcore" collector is really rare these days I'd say - money constraints, families etc, some people actually grow up as well..

Re: Popularity of candy cabinets today
They're more popular in Europe than they were in 2003 when I started. That being said I think the demand is dropping. The awful yen > any currency, is largely to blame. It's much more expensive to import from Japan now probably 2x more when you factor everything in.
As mentioned above there are a number of different types of collector, an awful lot buy them, get bored, tight on space or money and sell them on.
In the uk I would estimate 300-500 + whatever Jeff has in his warehouse
This is total guess work
Killer cabs imports: 100-200 approx
IC09: 150-200 approx
Casino / random: 100 approx
Whilst the novelty has worn off for me, I now collect Barbie dolls, I will always have at least one candy at home.

Re: Popularity of candy cabinets today
Really!?? I honestly dont rmember there being som many.
I guss a lot where not on show or non working . Wow, thats a lot.
Personally, I think its a bit tougher to get a cab now as not because there not out there but people have bought what is there and now you have to wait or ask people if there selling.
I remember a time on here where every week, id log on and see another cab I wanted. Now there not that many for sale. I think its back to my first point though of people buying, not using but just cant be arsed to move them.

Also blame the fact that the cost of living is easily 30/40% more than back in the KC days - back then I was rich enough to afford M&S food, now it's blue stripe baby..tetsujin wrote:Really!?? I honestly dont rmember there being som many.

Re: Popularity of candy cabinets today
My path to owning a candy cabinet has been through games.
I never really liked the arcades much when I was younger, but I have over the years grown to really enjoy arcade games.
Perhaps because as I have gotten older my time to invest in big blockbuster games, and my tolerance over time sinks in games, has lowered exponentially
And I guess for me, the arcade machine gives me the same kind of enjoyment of playing games as the turntable gives me when listening to music
On another note, you guys reference IC09 – what is this?

Don't do it. I can't think of a way you could buy more happiness for £600 than an Egret 2, except maybe hookers and class A drugs.kernow wrote:I'd only get mmh, £600ish for it, it's almost not worth it
