Super Street Fighter II - The Tournament Battle *Working!*
Super Street Fighter II – Tournament Battle!
Just in case anyone, like myself, is interested to know how the Tournament Mode operates/plays/connects etc... then read on!
If you would like any more pix or a video of the setup in action, feel free to ask.
Items needed:-
4 x Super Street Fighter II CPS2 Boards (mine are rev. 930911)
4 x CPS2 'A' Motherboards!
4 x Arcade machines!!!! (or 4 x TVs 4 x Superguns 4 x Scart Leads and 4 x ATX power supplies)
8 x Megadrive pads or modified DC sticks!
4 x S-Video cables – *edit* - previously stated <1.5 metres - tested with longer cables and these worked fine.
1 x Pair of cutters and some electric tape!
Firstly, thank you to whoever it was for uploading the Japanese Tournament Battle manual ages ago on another forum – this came in very handy indeed.
There’s an American manual online, but it missed some information – the Japanese manual states that the cables have to be <1.5 metres in length, although i have since found out that the cable length does not affect the performance.
The manual also pointed out the there was no loopback from board 4 --> board 1, which is what I had originally tried.
Instead it showed board 1 with an unidentified input – ‘return connector’.
The Test Menu must be entered on all four boards, and the game mode set to 'Tournament'
'Single' game mode allows standard 'The New Challengers' gameplay.
When I originally tried the four boards, one was in my arcade machine, with 2 x 3 metre cables connecting it to the other boards – it didn’t work!
The next time I tried it, I had 4 x superguns and s-video cables, with the fourth cable looping back from the output of board 4 into the input of board 1.
Again, this didn’t work.
Finally, after reviewing the manuals, I tried again – 4 x superguns, 3 x 1 metre s-video cables connecting the boards, and 1 x s-video cable connecting into the input of board 1. Again, there was no sign of success. I decided to cut the s-video cable inputting board 1 and try bridging the cables, to see if this would create a return signal and activate the tournament mode. After a few combinations – Bingo!
It was easier than I thought - i thought that I was gonna have to rewire all the cables!
Wires disconnected resulted in ‘terminal check’ repeatedly flashing. Once the shielded wires were connected, ID1, ID2, ID3 and ID4 were displayed on their respective screens and the tournament mode came to life!
Having fully stripped the cable, I can confirm that it is pins 3&4 that need to be bridged, with pins 1&2 left redundant. Ideally, a nice ‘dongle’ could be made out of an s-video cable end!
Connections on the cps2 board:-
Internal views:-
The menus and configurations were the same as stated in the manual
My Setup (three tv's missing and a bit sketchy to say the least!):-
My setup MK2:-
IC09 - The REAL DEAL!
Demo screens:-
Let’s start fighting:-
Screen sweeps across all the competitors:-
Get Ready!
After the match (only one round) – swap seats/contollers, a really cool inclusion in this game is that if you have whooped someone real fast,
you can continue to duke it out while the other competitors finish their matches – similar to being on the bonus stages!!!
Fight!
Change seats?
The final results are displayed on each screen respectively:-
Screen 1
Screen 2
Screen 3
The Tournament champion is shown on all screens:-
If a player wins three Tournaments in a row, then he is the proper Tournament 'Champion!' and retires.
And finally, a video of the games networked up and running at the IC09
Just in case anyone, like myself, is interested to know how the Tournament Mode operates/plays/connects etc... then read on!

Impressive work You'd think Capcom would've made it so there wasn't seat swapping required though

Yeah, I would have thought so, too. With all the seat swapping there is always the danger of getting confused when several players are using the same character.cools wrote:Impressive work You'd think Capcom would've made it so there wasn't seat swapping required though

Wowee - First time anyones ever called me that...usually it's s***head, or something like that!!!YOU ARE MY HERO.
Yeah - it was a fair bit of money - thought i'd treat myself tho, it took me long enough to get all 4 boards! Plus the fact that I couldn't find any info ANYWHERE on the net made it a bit of a challenge to make it work, and a pleasure to be able to document it so that others can undertsand how it works if they want to do it themselves!!!!Thats a lot of money for what you can effectively do on SFA on the 360
Ha ha ha - definitley, especially if there's beer involved! 8 x Blankas = tricky to keep track of!!!!With all the seat swapping there is always the danger of getting confused when several players are using the same character.

Nice one Guy. Although next time I come round looks like you'll be finishing 8th rather than second.

That's an awesome write-up. I'd always wondered how it worked (and wish I could have seen a 4 machine setup!). Thanks for sharing!

Such a shame that Capcom didn't do a Super Turbo update. That would have be fab
Re: Super Street Fighter II - The Tournament Battle *Working!*
I guess for practical tournament purposes though, the system provided by The Tournament Battle is just too restrictive.
