Name some great vertical JAMMA games...that AREN'T shooters!
I love me some shooters - but sometimes I just need a change of pace.
Been playing some Rally Bike and Lethal Crash Race in my cab lately - both mad fun.
Lethal Crash Race (JP version) is a crazy top down racer that rotates the track on turns. I say crazy because the cast of characters include a bug eating man with monocle who strips down to his underwear when winning, a creepy mother/daughter team and of course, a flaming gay cowboy. Frantic speed and awesome 2p matches.
Rally Bike is another top down racer - except youre on a bike, and it's straight, rally style racing. It's no where near as fast as Lethal Crash Race, but requires more technical driving and dodging. And it has it's share of craziness - last night I discovered that if I use a ramp to jump on top of a truck full of pigs, I immediately take control of the truck and just plow myself to victory. Easily becoming one of my favorite boards for my NAC.
Any other vertical JAMMA games you love that arent of the shooter variety? List them here!

Fast Lane (Konami 1987, 2P)
Arkanoid (Taito 1987, 2P)
Most arcade Golf games are also vertical
You can search for "VRC" to see vertical games here, it will also show if they are JAMMA or older "unique" hardware:

Just discovered this game:
Fire Trap
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XsX0NBR ... re=related"
Looks kind of cool, but havent played it. Seems to remind a lot of people of Crazy Climbers.
Since this is a dual stick game, you think it will work on a 2p control panel?

Rush & Crash / The Speed Rumbler. I just got this and playing it again after all these years (outside of MAME) was a revelation. I still love it.

Re: Name some great vertical JAMMA games...that AREN'T shoot
Empi. Rush & Crash / Speed Rumbler is one of the best games ever made, I think. I've had the game in my collection since it was almost new.
I remember that the difference between Rush & Crash and Speed Rumbler (test PCB that the operator got from Capcom) was the order of stages. But later in Mame I see that the stages come in the same order as in Rush & Crash. The game is awesome with major slowdowns at certain points, but still a masterpiece from that great era.
Also, Empi, I remember that there are two of these ceramic RAM ICs on the bottom board that get very hot when playing. So keep the board free on the top and bottom sides, best to have it mounted vertically so that heat can escape upwards. If you cover these ICs, very soon you will see graphic garbage.
Fire Trap.. Oh yes. Fire Trap is one of the fantastic fun games I still haven't got in my collection. I remember seeing it for the first time around the late 80's in my local arcade, and I was very impressed by it.
And there's one on ebay as we speak:

Thanks for the info, Uncle. The first thing I did when I got this board was putting brand new 2-layer PCB feet from Seimitsu on it, so it's pretty well ventilated.

Re: Name some great vertical JAMMA games...that AREN'T shoot
I have Speed Rumbler as well! Seems like a good game - but to be honest, I hardly played it because I stocked up on a bunch of PCBs before I got my NAC working. One of these days I'll get to it and put some proper time into it... The little I played seems a cross between Jackal and the original GTA (because you can get out of your car).
Noticed that Fire Trap on eBay also - just didn't jump on it because of the (potential) sound losses thatarticular board seems to have. Plus not really sure if it's play on a 2P CP without some modifications.
Noticed a couple of people said Bombjack. Not familar with that one - what's it like?

Re: Name some great vertical JAMMA games...that AREN'T shoot
Good job there Empi.
Soupbones. If you don't know BombJack, I'd urge you to get to know it a.s.a.p. It's the strangest platform game, and I remember refering to it as "that strange moth-guy collecting cherries". It's very colorful, very spectacular, very exclusive (there are only BombJack and BombJack II that are like this), and it is very addictive once you know how to play it.
You basically jump around these platforms collecting *bombs*, avoiding enemies, tapping the jump-button to stay in the air longer. The game's graphics were quite dazzling for its time (still are), this is 1984, and the music, different on each stage, is also very memorable.
You can play the game simply by collecting all the bombs on the screen, when every bomb is gone you advance to the next level. However, to earn as high score as possible you will need to pay attention to the details. And there are many. Understand the bonus timing, and watch the bombs; one of them is has actually a lit up fuse! And that is the order at which you ought to collect the bombs. Always take the one with the burning fuse. Do it right and you'll get a big bonus.
I love this game so much I made fan-art for it. Look:
.. I think the guy is actually a little 'Batman', no?
