The Term "Candy Cab"

I find this term even more offensive than "shmup." I don't go around calling 2 seater cars "Fiero Cars" just because one of the first 2 seaters I saw was a Pontiac Fiero. "Hey, nice Fiero Car, brah!" "Uhm, this is a Ferrari." "Yeah, I know, I just like to call 2 seaters 'Fiero cars!'" :problem: *PUNCH*

I was kinda curious if some people even know where the term came from. Dig this (from here: http://www.giantbomb.com/arcade/60-84"):
Candy Cabs are Japanese sitdown cabinets. They are called candy cabs because the exterior finish resembles hard candy.
Oh, I'm well aware of the actual origin of the term. Ironically, the Neo Candy was one of the first "sit-downs" *wink/nudge* I was exposed to (before "the term that will not be mentioned" was coined). Jackie Chan is still displeased.

OOOOhhhh... Sorry, I read your post too fast. Now that I've actually read the article you linked to, I get it (sorry!)

But out of curiosity, what is it about the term "candy cab" that you find offensive (besides them being named after the Neo Candy range)? And shmups too, since you brought it up.

See "Fiero Car" example. It's doesn't make any sense to use either term.

It's just a stupid word that's embarrassing to say out loud :D

As much as us non-Brits do not refer to all vaccum cleaners as "hoovers," that is actually a good example, as Hoover vaccum cleaners were the first majorly successful household vacuum cleaner. Iconic.
Chi wrote:Not to mention Walkman, Duck tape, Aspirin, Heroin...
Walkman - the iconic portable (full sized) cassete tape player. They were there at the start, everybody else tried to copy it.

Duck tape - "duct tape" is tape used on air ducts. There is no Duct Tape (TM). Your point?

Asperin - name coined by Bayer for their mass produced acetylsalicylic acid. Bayer was responsible for worldwide distribution and making this compound a household name. Iconic.

Heroin - there is no licensed product of the sort. Your point?

My point is, there is nothing iconic about the Neo Candy, as there were plenty of other widely distributed Japanese sit-down cabs before it, and therefore no reason exists to call things before or after by that particular name.

Not sure I've seen that last brand on the shelves of Wal-Mart.

Heroin was the brand name obtained by Bayer to sell diacetylmorphine. It was an over the counter drug back then (circa 1900).

We call them candy cabs because that's what seems to be the agreed-upon term for these things. We could call them "Japanese sit-down arcade machines" but I feel like that's too much of a mouthful. I've always found that there are more important things to worry about than what we call things.

There are precedents in literature that strongly suggest that Duck was the first producer of waterproof heavy-duty adhesive tape, and it is commonly known as Duck Tape (as well as the useless and restricting "Duct" tape variant). It was originally used for sealing ammunition cases, which had nothing at all to do with ducts.
Chi wrote:Heroin - there is no licensed product of the sort. Your point?
No longer, sure. However it was initially a German Trademarked product - another creation of Bayer AG (at that point in time merely Friedrich Bayer & Co). The simplest chemical name for it is diamorphine.

I'm not aware of any widely distributed (within the West - where the name originates) Japanese-style cabinets that pre-date the Neo Candy 19, and to those of us that remember them, they were indeed iconic. Care to enlighten us?

I stand corrected. Yet another rightfully iconic name.

I don't believe there was ever a "Neo Candy 19." Maybe you are thinking of the "Neo 19?" The earliest "Neo Candy" I've seen is a Neo Candy 25 or 29. Further west, in the States, I don't recall seeing any JP sit-down cabs "widely distributed," save the friends of mine that imported them, so when I said that, I meant in the country of origin (Japan).

According to the wiki, SNK's earliest cab with the word "candy" in it was the SNK Candy 18, which was stated to have been realeased in 199x. Let's be generous and say that the Candy 18 came out in 1990. Well, what other major releases came out in 1990 or *gasp* before?

I have to go with Chi on this. Sure, there were cabs released prior to the SNK Candy's, but how many were stateside? The first candy I remember seeing was a SNK Super Neo 29 Candy. It was an incredible sight from what I remember, actually sitting down to play games that weren't racing games almost seemed blasphemous at the time. It had some sort of MVS in there, could have been a one-slot because the only game that I ever remember seeing was the original Metal Slug, back in 1996/7. I remember at the time there being discussion about a new candy being made by Sega that was designed for fighting games, so that each player had their own screen (of course, this was the Versus City). So I know that the whole of Japanese cabs were being called candy cabs at least as far back as then.

Hmm, yes, the "tannoy" vs "public address system debate". If you don't like the term "candy", why not just use "sit-down"? I can understand why it might irritate, but you're unlikely to be able to affect change at this point. A bit like "phoenix" vs "suicide free" which is a pet hate of mine.

I sort of agree with Undamned - I think the name is a bit daft, and it (like shmup) just strikes me as a bit weird. On the other hand, I don't have any better suggestions.

I don't think calling a Japanese cab a Candy is as easy to swallow as calling a tissue a Kleenex (which is very common in the US.)

Oh, and shmups should be called shooters. That's what they were called at the peak of their popularity, and frankly it just sounds better than "shmup." Frankly, I'd take the term "shootie" over "shmup."

Ugh. Kleenex. I'll take candy cab to Kleenex any day.
Although after living in Pittsburgh for half a decade, I'll take anything and everything over "pop" for soda/coke/carbonated beverages. Even typing that out made me cringe.

Don't tell me you're one of those people that will refer to any soda as a "coke" i.e. any orange soda is "orange coke"

....and "pop" and "soda" are equally good words for it, just depends on what part of the country you're in.

I always say Shoot 'm up , I even read Shmup as " shoot 'm up " .

If anyone says Shmup in my face I always reply with " Gesundheit " !
