Many years ago over on the neo-geo forums there used to be several container group buys to the US. Egret 2s were going for around $500-$600 and Astros a bit less.
There was a guy who had a warehouse near a port that helped receive and ship cabs out all over the US. Not soon after he was convicted of 1st degree murder, decided to represent himself at trial, and was being televised on Dateline NBC. Machines from those orders were henceforth known as murder cabs.
Man i remember that, crazy, we had a similar situation with a local pinball collector (in his 50s), he went mad with jealousy and executed his ex and her new bf.
He texted another collector and told him to help his kids sell his collection, was proboably planning a suicide after but didnt go thru with it, the whole thing got an episode on a "famous murders" tv show.
Not sure what happened with his collection or if hes still in prison (Sweden has very lenient sentencing), his collection is worth quite a bit in todays prices tho..
That's crazy, but that's how it is with collectables. Had a deep discussion with another collector a few weeks ago how insane some things raised in value and that some old collectors quit their hobby. So the question is, why is this happening? Cause new collectors joining the game and pay these prices, or are collectors selling for more to get those expensive stuff? what's your opinion? With cabs it's easy, cause those who import are dictating the prices and no one can blame them that shipping for example is getting more expensive or taxes.
Nowdays there is awareness of current market value.
Back then most people in the scene used to sell for the price they payed for a game.
It's also funny that prices started to go up with the financial crisis or shortly after.
Below is an old price list posted by sven666 in the swedish scene forum. This is waaaaay before my own time back when they made "japan deal" and split the import costs. To answer the questions regarding new collectors etc... I was always interested in arcade games but I played console ports and didn't buy my first woodie cabinet until 2014 when I split up with my gf and got a whole house by myself. Back in 2005-2010 I was more into aviation and all my money went into a pilot license.

I bought a suitcase of MVS games back from HK once, popped in to Excellent in early 2000’s and most common games like KOF99 were about £10 each, they had shelves of games in there and happy for me to go though them.

I remember when @redstallone was selling three Candy 18s for 800 euros. Not per cab, but for all three. That has forever ingrained in my memory as a thing I should have jumped on. I want to say that was still at the time of the KC forums.
I bought a number of MVS carts in 2007 on eBay. Samurai Shodown 4 for 1 euro, FF Real Bout 2 for 4.50, and AeroFighters 2 for 11.50. None one else wanted them, lol.

Correct! For the longest time those cabs were referred to as "murdercabs" Occasionally they will pop up in Atlanta but not as often as they used to. Dude had a massive warehouse full of stuff.
