System 256 and Boardmaster Supergun

So I picked up a Tekken 5 DR kit and connected it to a boardmaster supergun. When I first powered it on, it was running fine but then it froze with a white screen. I turned off the game and turned it back on and now it’s stuck on the start program screen. I’m using a Namco I/O board so I’m wondering if the freezing issues have to do with it needing a separate power supply. Any suggestions?

you will need at least 5v at the system 246 power input header

Where do I test that?

At the power header with a multimeter.

I'm not sure the BM PSU outputs enough power to run that - it won't run my Naomi and capcom JVS-JAMMA.

I’ve seen pics of it done plus I’ve done it myself with my friends Capcom I/O. Your 5V voltage might not be on high enough on the boardmaster. By the way can you be a little more specific where I put the leads from the volt meter? Am I placing them on the 6 pin cable itself at the motherboard, the Namco I/O, or the Jammaboard connector itself to read out 5 volts?

You are definitely right though, I’m getting 4.74 V when I put the lead on pin 1 and pin 3.

How high does the voltage need to go in order to properly power the board? I put it up to 5.16 V and still no luck, gives me stuck at the starting board screen still.

you need a minimum of 4.90v for the game to run but thats is on the filter board of the system 256 and not at the io board or power supply, it should be about 5.05v ideally

another issue may be the rom drive

Can I use any DVD rom drive to replace it or does it have to be a specific DVD drive? Also I noticed when the board is powered up, the fan isn’t running so maybe it is the voltage issue. I checked it at the I/O and I checked it at the jammaboard connector. I’ll check the motherboard this weekend. Only thing that sucks is getting at the leads on the 6 pin cable below the board. I’m really thinking about using a separate power supply and use my Sega I/O instead.

i am not sure how picky 256 are with dvd drives, the 246 were really picky- samsung, lg, and toshiba gave good results but depended the model- obviously it has to be ide
the fan not running is a real concern, that needs to be resolved immediately

Here’s some thoughts, after looking at Tekken 5 instruction manual online, I noticed that the fan runs off the 12 Volt lead. Right now it’s currently not running and I ran the voltmeter on the 12 Volt and got no voltage off of that. So am I to assume that the fan is dead and needs replacement?

Ok I tested my SSF2 board and my fan isn’t running there either, but the game is running no problem. So am I to believe there is a problem with the 12 Volt on my Supergun?

12V volt usually runs the audio amp on boards, so if you have audio through the jamma edge, it should be OK. However, if you've tested it with a multimeter, and you have no voltage, it's pretty conclusive. It's easiest to test it at the PSU end. Just put the red meter lead on the 12V terminal, black meter lead on ground.

Funny you mention that because I’m not getting sound from my CPS 2 board nor my system 256 when I first powered it up. Had to run audio directly to my PVM in order to get my sound to work. So if the 12 Volt isn’t working properly then what’s my next step? Replace the sanwa power supply or is it something easily repairable?

It could be repairable, hard to say for certain. Open up the PSU and look for obvious faults. Burn marks are easy to spot.

Does yours have fuses on the +5, +12, -5 lines - if so check if any have blown.

Do I have to open the power supply to get at the fuses?

Actually looked at the instructions, pulled the 12V fuse and looks like it’s blown, will be buying a replacement tomorrow
