Vogatek Supergun MK4 - How can I get the test switch to work

Post by Spankenstein »

Is there some kind of trick to getting the Test Button to work properly?

I have the 2 wires attached to a button and the other crimped ends slotted into the two available slots.

Image

I've screwed them in place but pressing the button does naff all on my Hyper Neo Geo.

Any suggestions?

I really don't want to go down the soldering route if I can help it, cos I'm crap with that sort of thing! :problem:

That's because the Vogatek is built for JAMMA, where the test switch is on Pin 15.
The MVS/HNG64 has the test switch on Pin M.

There is a switch on your Hyper Neo Geo (on the back of the mobo) that changes the PIN-layout between MVS and JAMMA - if that helps.

Thanks guys. I'll look out for that switch and report back once I get home from work :)

Both switches were already set to JAMMA.

I guess the problem must lie with my crappy wiring skills or something incorrect with the supergun test button setup?

What else can I try?

On a side note: Only MVS can output stereo?

You could take a piece of wire and simply ground the test pin.

The JAMMA standard is designed to power a single 8 ohm speaker, outputting speaker-level mono audio.

This is one of the things SNK "upgraded" with their version - now known as the MVS pinout.

Can you explain, in layman's terms, how to do that please?

(Turn board on) Take a piece of wire, one end of the wire touches any of the ground pins (I like to use Pin 28), the other end touches the test pin. This is essentially what a button does, it connects a pin to a ground.

Brilliant, thank you for spelling it out to me. I wasn't sure which pin was what. :D

It turns out that the test connection on the supergun is at fault.

If I connect the GND on the supergun to pin 15, the test menu appears.

If I connect the Test on the supergun to pin 28, nothing happens.

I guess this is why my button produces no response.

I can live with this problem though and thanks again for the help.

Since you have a multimeter, you should be able to tell if the switch is broken or if there is a loss of continuity between the switch and 'test' and/or 'GND'

I know you have a multimeter because you have PCBs which you are running with your supergun and everyone knows to own and play PCBs without having a multimeter is criminal :problem:

I'm ashamed to say that I don't own one :palm:

I ought to buy one it seems! :)

A multimeter is an absolute necessity.

I'm a newbie to all this so I got to ask, how does a multimeter help prevent this sort of thing from happening?

Because you will know the voltages your PSU is outputting. Feeding a board (for instance) 5.8v across an IC may allow it to run, but it will also fry it in the process.

What make/type of multimeter comes highly recommended then? Are there any particular features I should look out for?

I mean, a multimeter should be an investment. Think of how expensive a PCB can be, so it makes sense that you would not want to go cheap on the multimeter.
I own one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Extech-EX330-Auto ... B000EX0AE4"
Of course, you could also go all-out and get a very expensive Fluke instead.

Spend a tenner on one from your nearest maplin. It'll do everything you want bar some of the fancy stuff you'd need to mess around with monitors.

IMO buy the one up from the cheapest one.

Some of the gutter level ones have very weird battery arrangements.
