Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration etc.
I do use HLSL settings but only on monitors that are 1080p or 1200 high. I think I read somewhere that to properly replicate the dot mask overlay, offset CRT guns a bit and scanlines you basically need at least 3 pixels on an LED display for each single pixel of the game. So a 240 high game = 720p minimum.
Here's some of my settings on a 1080p display. Make sure in image enhancements you are using 'none' as a lot of the pixeldoubling modes mess with the HLSL values too.

Mame in cab thread Frontends gamelists configuration etc
I currently have 3 mame machines, all running on on-board graphics 2 x 31khz and 1x15khz via Soft15khz.
The machine specs are all dual-core, pretty good speeds 3ghz so would anything be gained by getting a graphics card for them, particularly in terms of Noami/Gauntlet legends emulation?

Dreamcast is hopeless in mame, but Demul does a good job with a mid range DX11 gpu.

Just discovered that clrmamepro has a well fleshed out filtering system built in, which is quite nice for permanently getting rid of stuff that you'll never/can't play or don't want.

What crt emudriver compatible card should I get if I also want to use demul? Some cards don't come with vga port, is that ok?

It's okay if at least one of the DVI ports is DVI-I.
My low profile HD 7750 does a great job in my experience. I've tried Monkey Ball, Planet Harriers and the Capcom Fighters. Though now much newer cards are good options.

Doesn't sound like it. It should mean that the "inaccurate" slowdown where you are CPU bound might be better.

No joke, Deathsmiles ran like a dog on the E8400 I have, but now benches at 400-600% with blitter delay enabled.

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration etc.
I'm having a bizarre problem with MAME 191 with certain games now I've updated it and got the CRT Emudriver stuff installed and working correctly. Horizontal games work fine, but all vertical stuff like DDP, ESPGaluda, etc now runs at 50% speed. I can press F11 and see the "50%" in the top-right corner. Meanwhile, CPS2, MVS etc all seem to work perfectly.
I'm tearing my hair out about this - all these games worked pretty much perfectly in my previous version of MAME on the exact same PC (albeit with the odd slowdown in newer SH3 stuff like DFK BL), but now they're just unplayable. Even really old stuff like the original Donpachi is running at 50% speed. If the horizontal games work perfectly, what's affecting these ones?! Does anyone have any idea what could be happening here please?

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration etc.
After fiddling around some more with individual settings, I struck gold and got DFK BL working at full-or-faster speed with an individually-named .ini file, away from the main mame.ini default. I downloaded WinMerge and after 45 mins of more fiddling and tweaking, I narrowed the cause of the slowdown to two options in the .ini file causing them: "syncrefresh" and "waitvsync" being set to 1.
My standard mame.ini does not have these two settings enabled, but when generating a new .ini file per-game upon loading (with "writeconfig" to 1), those options are enabled in the new file. Turning them off in the unique-game .ini file must be 100% disabling those options when the game is run from that point on, which fixes the problem (both must be disabled or the game still runs at 50% speed).
Either GroovyMAME is turning on those sync options when it's being run, or my frontend (Attract Mode) is doing it as part of launching GroovyMAME. I confess that I don't have a great idea how CRT Emudriver and SwitchRes works, but running it on a 31k monitor and rotating vert games to run on a hori monitor is probably screwing up the process somewhere. I'll double-check with Attract Mode is doing, but for now I'll have to hand-edit each game I find that doesn't run at the right speed... oh well, could be worse.

Running them in an interlaced mode will do that

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration etc.
I'm just going with whatever res/mode SwitchRes is giving me when launching each game, I haven't really fiddled with anything. Again, not surprised if running tate games on a regular 31k monitor is **** something up. I can live with changing a config file once per troublesome game and having a sub-optimal experience if so.

Use a vertical.ini file to sort all your verts in one go.
