Re: moonwalker system 18 sega problem

Shot in the dark: If it doesn't lock up the same way every time, you might have a loose joint around.

Whooops! Right, I was looking at cps1.cpp instead of fcrash.cpp. Sorry. :shifty:
Yet, as far as I can see in fcrash.cpp both dinopic and dinopic2 are sets with 4 code roms and 8 gfx roms. And in both cases the pic dump is marked as bad. :)

Re: Help with a bootleg Cadillac and Dinossaurs

'Punisher' and 'Cadillac and Dinosaurs' bootlegs use a OKI M6295 DAC and a PIC to play the music. There's no Z80 or YM2151 on this board because the PIC subsystem simulates the QSOUND hardware these games require. If that's the case, then one more reason to have it dumped. :) Maybe the PIC is even ...

Re: Help with a bootleg Cadillac and Dinossaurs

The audio could be as easy to fix as checking the big caps, +12V at the power amp and then backtracking to the audio chips. Your photos are too little to try and see which stuff is in there, but you will probably find an OKI6295 DAC, an YM2151 and a Z80. Check if those are emitting sound at all, the...

Re: Taito F3 Super Cup Finals: Who has a cart?

Trying to find out if this exists in cart form or not, and if so, which version of the game code is on it. For some reason all the dumps of this game (including one which appears to come from a cart version) have protection in it. This protection relies on NVRAM (like the Bubble Bobble 3 Extra Mode...

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

Should it have been a slight misplacement or damage of the yoke or purity rings block, you wouldn't be able to fix it with the external degausser. Therefore I'm clueless. :-o The only thing that comes to my mind at this point is a bizarre, wild and unlikely theory involving the internal metal pixel ...

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

Do I understand your post correctly? You just implied that the degaussing either does not work at all, or it is having no effect. Are you sure the coil gets powered to begin with? You could check the continuity of all of the few involved traces from power input up to the coil connector... (with powe...

Re: Gaia Crusaders - bugs

The easiest thing to look for is loose joints. Try lightly knocking on the pcb with some non-conductive object like the handle of a screwdriver.
You will see immediately if it's a loose-joint dependent issue.
Otherwise please post some photos or, even better, videos.

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

The one you found on ebay looks comparable technically-speaking. With regard to changing the whole ptc + coil thing, if you can find a mechanically fitting replacement then why not? Just be careful to the usual stuff and maybe try the new one from the outside first, before you go through all the work.

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

Being it a PC monitor, where the degausser gets used at each power on, I would try and stick with a part identical to the original. Since we can't know for sure whether the thermistor is really worn out or not, it would make little sense to add another variable in the picture. Yet of course the part...

Re: Hyper Duel PCB shameful condition

Before you do anything to that chip, you might want to throughly clean around it with plenty isopropyl alcohool and check if it's really badly soldered. After all the stuff you see there is just flux rests. The problem might still be somewhere else and easier to fix.

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

PTH451A180N21 sounds like the best choice to me as well. 2 ohms discrepancy account for a 25% difference which will reflect in a current increase with respect to the stated figures. It might be not that important, but I would also visually inspect the coil just to be on the safe side. It's probably ...

I see what you mean. That's certainly possible, yes.
Desoldering and measuring is just my preference: dead easy anyway (at least for me), and it leaves no room for doubts.

I do agree that it sounds like a daunting task. That's why it requires a brave soul. I did not mean to address anyone specific into doing it, so please don't feel targeted by my two cents. Imho a list of possible symptoms and links to threads where useful information has been provided on each specif...

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

40-93 indeed does sound like a production date code rather than the rest of the part number. Assuming that the part really went out of spec you could measure its resistance and see how it compares to the options available in the datasheet you already found. One other thing you can measure is the res...

Re: Discoloration keeps coming back daily at bottom right corner of the screen

Although a magnetized object nearby might be the issue, you do say that manually degaussing with an external coil works fine until you power it up the next day.
This indicates that the PTC of the degaussing circuit in the monitor might be aged and out of spec, so it's not doing its job properly.
