How to remove antistatic coating/scratches arcade monitor
Copy/pasted from a KC cache, originally written by gargoyle67.
Just fished removing my antistatic coating from my monitor, incase other people want to do this I though I would do a little guide.
First you need a glass polishing kit, I got mine from this site:
http://www.scratchglass.com/pages/glasspolishkit.htm"
they take paypal and are pretty quick at posting the kit.
You also need a power drill recommended speed 2000 rpms, and a water sprayer. I also recommend covering up the sides, top, and bottom around your monitor with towels as there will be a fair amount of spray, I didn't to start off and sprayed my wall and display cabinet and had to wipe them down so be warned !. (unplug power to your cab first !)
Edit**Also good to have a bowl of water for cleaning\wetting wiping cloth and a big kitchen roll for drying down the screen.
Ok read the instructions and then attach the buffer to the power drill, attatch the buffer disc:
Apply some of the polishing compound:
Get the spray bottle ready, I started the job without one (don't) you can control the amount of water with the sprayer a lot easier than with say a sponge:
Give the screen a light spray of water with the sprayer and then start to polish the screen with the drill-buffer moving back and forth horizontally from side to side. As you can see from the pic the coating starts to come off, takes quite a bit of time going over and over the area. A warning if you don't want you screen to crack DON'T hold the buffer in one spot for more than 20 seconds as per the instructions (heat build up=crack, not good Evil or Very Mad :
Zap that dirty looking coating, close up pic:
Just a couple of patches left, took me about 2 hrs to get to this stage:
Left mark up close:
Now you see it , now you don't Happy :
Bottom mark still visable:
Now it's not:
My new shiny screen :
Dito:
That's one dirty disc:
This pic show's how dirty the disc's got up until the last disc which I used to finished off with:
These were the marks that I had before I started this little project:
Diff angle:
I also had some marks down the left side of the screen and a few swirl marks right of centre, now all gone , The kit will also remove slight scratches as long as you can run your finger nail over the area and not snag your nail. I suppose all that's left to say is I'm over the moon with the job , It took about 3 hrs from start to finish. I also take no responsibility for any damage you do to your monitor from this guide, but you already knew that right Happy .

Isn't the antistatic coating there for a reason? It just sounds like a bad idea to get rid of it? :

Yeah, that was what I was thinking too. But I think the only thing taht will happen is that you have to remove dust from the screen more often. Does someone know what material this antistatic coating is? Is there a way to apply a new layer of such coating?DarthBoMan wrote:Isn't the antistatic coating there for a reason? This coating usually also adds a bit of contrast to the screen. Without it, the screen will be a bit brighter, and you see things much clearer.
I've seen a de-coated tube where it was possible to see the phosphor after glow a bit. With the layer removed, the contrast goes down a bit as well. I didn't really like it.
Be careful when doing this, use water and a face/eye mask. The glass/coating you sand of is easily inhaled and as you know the tube front is lined with lead to prevent any passing of x-rays.

Here's a couple of pics from screens I've done in the past, from here http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2448manimani wrote:is it possible to update pictures please ?
I only did it because the anti static coating on both monitors was already rubbed off/scratched in places, and looked pretty ugly.

It's not necessary to use a machine polisher. I've done one of my own and one for a friend by hand ( ) using a microfibre cloth and rubbing conpound.

Curious, what polishing compound are you guys using? Anything specific that would be best to avoid?

I can confirm that that one had a happy ending.Rossyra wrote:It's not necessary to use a machine polisher. I've done one of my own and one for a friend by hand ( ) using a microfibre cloth and rubbing conpound.
It looks great now and I don't think we ingested too much lead. Just jizz mainly.

I know what Novus is, but I have never heard about using it on a monitor :Oyosai wrote:Have a quick forum search for Novus.

Re: How to remove antistatic coating/scratches arcade monitor
I guess you can use nearly every polish compound.
Zaino f.e. has a glass polish in their product line.
http://www.zainostore.com/product/Z-12.html
I used that for car windows with my excenter polisher. It won't remove scratches, but makes your window very clean again. Problem is, that very fine scratches are more visible afterwards because they are not filled anymore with dirt.

Re: How to remove antistatic coating/scratches arcade monitor
Done this today on my Astro ,it has a MS9 monitor in it but the anti static coating had loads of scratches and was also patchy which made white screens look pretty awful.. I used G3 and it took me about an hour and my arm feels like it's gonna fall off but it was well worth it. Screen is now scratch free and looks much more vibrant and clean.
