Custom Dragon's Lair II woodie. Is it worth it?

Post by Mokum »

There's a guy in Italy selling this cab:

It plays Dragon's Lair II, which is a game I'd love to own.

Now the (insane) idea that crossed my mind: I get the cab and turn it into a Dragon's Lair II cab "wannabe".
I've found an eBay seller who makes repro graphics and would help with custom sizes.
I'd clean the woodie a bit, prepare the surfaces and then apply the graphics.
I have no idea whether the idea is insane or just "meh" as I cannot foresee if the final result would be lovely or just a "Frankenstein" cab with no soul ;)

What's your opinion? :)

Isn't Cosmic Guerilla a proper valuable cab?

I have no clue about that.
Is the game worth it?

The game probably isn't that great, but that cab is. It looks like it's in pretty good nick too. Would be a shame to see all that art lost. I say leave it be and try to find a generic woody.

I had this thought just because I found this cab in a "ready-to-go" state.
To do what you suggest I should: buy the cab, then get a second cab, move the game from the first to the latter and then find someone willing to buy an empty cab...
Too much of an hassle...

You probably can convert any woody into a DL2. You can get a decent woody already < 150 euro.
What makes this cab so special that you can use it for DL2?

No clue if Cosmic Guerilla is valuable or not, in my opinion any cab that you don't see much anymore is valuable.
But on the other hand, if you don't buy this cab, somebody else might be (and convert it any way ;) )

This cab is ready to go, that's it.
I repeat: to play DL2 on another cab I'd buy this, get rid of the Cosmic Guerrilla cab (I highly doubt someone would buy it empty) and buy a second one. Not worth the hassle.
It's just a thought. I'm all about cabs' preservation but working on a project thrills me a bit I gotta admit...

I would say depends on the kind of foil you use for the artwork. Some vinylfoils are like a easy removable protection film. They use it on cars and stuff. Maybe you could get the artwork on such a foil. This way you could make your converstion in a way that conserves the original cab, so that you can fully restore it some day. For the bezel and the marquee u could do the same or make some new and exchange.

It doesn't make any sense from my personal "arcade point of view" ;)
I love woodies, I grew playing with them, I'd rather source the original PCB other than playing DL2 on it ;)

That Cosmic Guerilla cab looks pretty cool , I would restore it with the original board .
I always disliked the Dragons lair and Space age laser disc games though, just controlling the outcome of a pre-recorded movie sequence always felt off to me .
