I have an account as well - If I could work out how to pay them, I'd be buying direct, agent fees and double postage is a deal killer on some items plus some sellers I want to buy stuff from block agents.

Penrhos ,You can buy but only up to certain amount i think 3000 yen after that you have to use a Visa card which is registered in Japan and pay a monthly payment of 300yen.
Its useful for asking questions though on items before bidding if you have an account.

Even if you have a Japanese bank account and speak flawless Japanese, the success ratio for having them ship abroad is still very low. 20-25% at best I'd say. Nobody wants to admit it, but the US and Europe are not that great either. If I could work out how to pay them, I'd be buying direct,

I think you are right, Japanese people dont want the hassle of dealing with foreigners outside of Japan.GaijinPunch wrote:Even if you have a Japanese bank account and speak flawless Japanese, the success ratio for having them ship abroad is still very low. 20-25% at best I'd say. I got starpine to ship me over a bunch of boards, but I paid him from my old Japanese bank account when I got my tax refund after leaving Japan last time. I had to deal with him in Japanese only, but he was pretty helpful and had no problems with me ordering from abroad.cozzie wrote:I think you are right, Japanese people dont want the hassle of dealing with foreigners outside of Japan.GaijinPunch wrote:Even if you have a Japanese bank account and speak flawless Japanese, the success ratio for having them ship abroad is still very low. 20-25% at best I'd say. I think that the first hurdle is getting money INTO a Japanese bank account from abroad, as even if you are in the country, it is pretty hard to put money in someone elses account without your own bank account first. I think you can actually do so if you send it from the post office, but its been a LONG time since I did one of those.
The fact is that most Japanese sellers aren't necessarily against selling abroad, but for all the hassle involved, it is much easier to deal domestically only. The best thing to do is to find someone who lives in Japan who would be willing to be your middleman for less than an agent, but to be honest, for all the work that the agents go through its pretty much worth it.
As I recall though, I think rinkya or someone were doing a promotion where you pay a set agent price monthly and you can buy multiple items at only the cost of transfer fees, domestic delivery and postage to you.

Re: Locating stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan
Grrr I made the mistake of looking to see how much things were. Some were ridiculous bargins (multiple copys of boards, 2 days left, no bids, 1000yen - compare to £50 quotes for a uk seller), some not so much. The problem is if I buy 1, i'll want something else, then something else, then it all piles up

It is far too tempting & I have no money in my account, nor do intend to put any in before Christmas for that sole reason.Dandy_Sephy wrote:Grrr I made the mistake of looking to see how much things were. You've got to factor in:
Cost of item
commission
Wire Fee
internal shipping
International shipping to you
What it essentially means is that the 1000y board would only really be a bargain if it was selling for £50+ over here. Shipping from Japan to the UK has nearly doubled in price over the last couple of years & the exchange rate has dropped. To make it work now it best to only buy things that you cannot get over here (like artwork, old boards, specialist stuff) or combine a lot of low cost stuff from the same seller to cut down on the shipping.
That being said you do get the odd insanely good bargain

With manye additionnal fees, I bought Mushihime sama for 50 000 ¥. The auction cost 40 000 ¥.
So we can say that it cost 20% more.

Re: Locating stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan
I've been looking for a thread like this for many moons, thanks man!
Is YHJ much cheaper than buying off a forum member/ebay once intermediary costs have been taken into account? I realise this would depend entirely on the price of the item, but speaking in general terms, is it usually cheaper?

Re: Locating stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan
No, I wouldn't say so, to be honest, but of course, it depends mostly on the game. I've been buying mostly from Europe and the US recently because it's cheaper than buying in Japan. That's mostly true for games that were popular in the west, for those that weren't, you're probably only going to get them from Yahoo Auctions.throneofwolves wrote:I've been looking for a thread like this for many moons, thanks man!

For example, I bought these at Yahoo Auctions which are not too common abroad, or were cheaper than abroad:
Sea Fighter Poseidon
Tropical Angel
Guwange
Momoko 120%
Higemaru
Teki Paki
Great Swordsman
Chuka Taisen
Espgaulda
Ketsui - Kizuna Jigoku Tachi
Kotoba no Puzzle Mojipittan
Joshi Volleyball
Onna Sanshirou
Also, I got these bundles cheaply:
Arkanoid Returns, Bubble Symphony, Gekirindan, Puchi Carat, Puzzle Bobble 2, Puzzle Bobble 3 (all F3 carts)
Taito F3 motherboard, Puzzle Bobble 3, Kyuukyoku Tiger II
NAOMI motherboard with H BIOS, Akatsuki Blitzkrieg Ausf. Achse, Gunspike, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Power Stone 2, Spawn, Virtua Striker 2 Ver. 2000
Virtua Striker 2 Ver. 2000, by the way, sells for obscene amounts in Japan.
The good thing I have found is that Japanese sellers are almost always honest: you don't get "Tested and Working" games that are neither tested nor working, and "untested" usually does mean untested. If they mention that the game is "junk" (ジャンク), that means that it may work and it may not, or there may be some slight problem with it. Importantly, it means that you can't send it back or get a refund - it's a "take it as is" situation. They usually included "NC-NR" in the listing, or in Japanese, ノークレーム、ノーリターン. I bought a junk Bonanza Bros., and it worked perfectly. I bought a junk Guwange, and it was badly damaged. I both cases I took a chance, and knew what I was doing.
I'll write up a guide on the Japanese phrases to look out for and post it later.

Thanks for the informative reply bro. I've always been curious as to whether or not I've been missing out on sweet deals by not using YAJ.Magic Knight wrote:...That's mostly true for games that were popular in the west, for those that weren't, you're probably only going to get them from Yahoo Auctions....
Yeah, I figured the main reason for using YAJ would be to aquire boards that would otherwise be difficult to source in the west, since, as you mentioned, once all costs have been accounted for it seems it would be almost impossible to end up being cheaper than buying from forums etc.

Re: Locating stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan
OK, here are a few things to look out for in auction descriptions.
DISCLAIMER: These phrases don't mean anything by themselves, a working knowledge of Japanese vocabulary and grammar is a big advantage. Auction descriptions are written for Japanese people who are used to the language, and missing an important verb ending might mean you end up with a game not working when you thought it would.
Basically, check the pictures, if it looks ok, it may well be. Japanese sellers tend to go out of their way to show defects and problems.
稼働確認済みです: The game has been tested and working.
動作確認はしていません: The game hasn't been confirmed to work.
動作未確認: The game hasn't been confirmed to work.
写真に写っているものが全てです: The photos show everything that's included. 写真: photo, 全て: everything
インスト: instruction sheet that would be displayed on the cabinet
マニュアル: manual for the operator usually. Sometimes there's a technical manual and a gameplay manual. Flying Shark, Rainbow Islands and other Taito releases are good examples.
説明書: instuction manual
取り説: user's manual
純正 means genuine
コピー means a copy (i.e. photocopy of a manual etc.)
カラーコピー means a colour copy
オマケ: something extra included for free
自作: home-made
ハーネス: wiring harness
JAMMA変換ハーネス: JAMMA conversion harness/adapter
お付けします: included (watch for the 付 character) Of course, if it says お付けしません, that means it's NOT included.
キズ: means a scratch or cut
汚れ: dirt
ジャンク: junk, may or may not work. Note that in Japan, "junk" could well be perfectly working stuff, just not tested, or with very slight damage. On eBay, it would probably be called "mint condition" (I wish that was a joke). I've bought a lot of "junk" that was perfect, but caveat emptor.
ノークレーム、ノーリターン: as mentioned before, "no claim, no return"
Under the current number of bids, you might see (in brown) ※「現在の価格」は最低落札価格に達していません。
This means that the reserve has not yet been met.
Hope that's some help, it's a start anyway, I'm sure myslef or others will think of some more important phrases.

Re: Locating stuff on Yahoo Auctions Japan
Hmmm if you guys want, shipping to the USA is VASTLY cheaper from Japan (typically only costing about 5 USD or so), I could serve as a proxy for you guys and bundle things up if you think it would save you a TON of money.markedkiller78 wrote:It is far too tempting & I have no money in my account, nor do intend to put any in before Christmas for that sole reason.Dandy_Sephy wrote:Grrr I made the mistake of looking to see how much things were.
