It'll probably play ok, but it's just looks like the virtua fighter peeps in cosplay with a lot of the previous kof charm and tongue-in-cheek-self-awareness sucked out of it and instead replaced with that over angsty serious anime vibe with a couple **** characters chucked in. Backgrounds in particular seem so lifeless. It's good they're trying, I honestly wasn't holding out much hope for anything other than phone games, and the gameplay appears to be faithful, but I don't think it's evolving into something for me theme wise that I'll want to treasure, or get invested in.

Maybe for those that are into say the tekken vibe and want a 2d gameplay style game? ... But is that a huge crowd these days? I suppose it could become the anime fans' mortal kombat, but again I imagine they'd be more down with guilty gear...?... idk... I suppose the old kof vibe/scene was pretty incoherent and niche anyway, and probably largely subsidized by related genre fans rather than strict kof fans - some of whom swore off anything post 98 anyways...

Of all the grumpy old git threads do we have a winner? :awe:

This actually looks very KOF to me. Reminds me of the trademark illustrations where everyone looks like a creepy waxwork with the same face.

I was skeptical at first but the more reveals I see the better it looks.

... for me this must be what it feels like to be kernow in a sf4 thread... Gameplay looks solid from what I can tell, but for me it seems they've just ripped the charm out of it. We'll see, maybe I'm getting too down on aesthetic choices...

I think you're right though. I was never much of a KOF fan but I could always admire the in-game art and animation.

Going by looks this definitely seems to lack the charm. I reckon you were spot on with your last paragraph above. Hardcore fans are the worst to cater to because they're so finicky and divided into niches within a niche. And yet by some miracle KOF 11-13 exist with some of the most amazing pixels ever gathered, but surprise surprise - half those KOF fans who aren't put off by the blockiness still don't buy it because... meh.

Release date announced!

Seems that the graphics are divisive but the system and gameplay looks fantastic.

Here's a link to the official site: http://www.snkplaymore.co.jp/us/games/kof-xiv/

Notice that SNK is now officially just SNK again. No more SNK Playmore.

EDIT: OK, I watched the English trailer and noticed that one button mash combos are in this game too now. Lame.

1 button mash combos will make absolutely no difference to competitive play though.

They're just for beginners who don't have very good execution. And i'm hearing the execution in this game is easier anyway.

If i have an opening for a combo i'll be taking off a lot more than what the auto combo will offer.

You're not wrong actually. SNK are throwing everything at it. They seem to have created more backgrounds in a few months than Capcom do in a couple of years. It's not exactly a looker but the gameplay looks faithful.

What makes that especially funny is how those backgrounds sort of look Street Fighter-ish rather than what we're used to seeing in KOF.

Now, how can I convince my brother to take the bullet and get a PS4...

The new characters (there are 19 of them in total!) are making me want to get this game. Xanadu especially is awesome.

It does look a lot like Street Fighter 4, but that's not a bad thing, SF4 played really well and I thought looked great as well.... it's always harder with 3v3 and I assume a much smaller budget. SF5 (at least for me) was disappointing so far, Tekken 7 isn't out until early 2017, so it'll be this and Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator for me :D
