Twin aero table restoration

Post by thomj »

I recently picked up this pair

Image

Image

I'll be keeping track of their return to life in this thread :awe:

Both have their troubles.

One is in generally nice shape apart from this rather large dent

Image

Nice monitor in it

Image

Generally good condition apart from that though and all original apart from the coin mech (including the outer section) which is all Americaned up.

The other has a fairly solid body. It's a little rusty though. Especially the legs. There's also a hole cut into the coin box from inside for no obvious reason.

Monitor's not so tasty

Image

The loom is a hack job and the pcb board, mounting frame and metal frame to support the 36 pin adge of the original loom are all missing.

Image

electrial safety isn't exactly perfect either :palm:

Image

also been broken into at some point. same US mech as the other too.

Image

First job is to strip them down to components.

More as I get to it!

Aero tables are lovely - always wanted one! Good luck with the restorations! Haha, you seem to be doing what I did a couple of years back... getting cabs in like they are out of fashion but doing them up, etc is A LOT of fun. I don't miss it though, did so much, so quickly that I'm not too fussed about getting another cab ever again (not like I need to anyhow! :shh: )

Anyway, I'll be following your thread to see you turn them into something lovely! :D Good luck!

German imports IIRC!

But I'm sure thomj will confirm.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Yeah, they came from Germany. Given the US coin mechs they seem to have built up a few travel miles :awe:

I should finish taking them apart tomorrow with a bit of luck. Almost done!

Any chance of a better picture of how the speakers are mounted? I need to fit a speaker in mine.

one had one done sloppily with a couple of holes drilled in the case near the vent and some bolts :palm: the other had no speaker. I was thinking of attaching some kind of hook type things to the case near the vent. Sticky backed so they're removable if required. Would hold a speaker fine while they're just sitting at home being played. Remove for transport etc. I'll let you know what I come up with anyway :awe:

Usual speaker mounting place is in a pod on the right hand side or in the bottom of the CP facing down.

I will look forward to see what you come up with, I am thinking of cutting a grille facing down in the control panel surround.

Before they go to be painted they need some of the lovely details removed so they can be reapplied afterwards.

Image

The metal serial number plate is kind of riveted on. A dremel thing would probably be the best way to get them out but as somone who doesn't own such fanciness I found the best way was to tap out the centre using a hammer and a small screwdriver bit then squeeze and prod and try and get the rest through.

Image

The stickers were a lot easier. I had a hairdryer on hand in case the adhesive needed loosening but it was an easy job. Since the paint didn't need preserving I used a blade to lift a corner

Image

then gently lift a bit more

Image

and peel being careful not to tear. You need to peel slowly just to make sure it doesn't get stretched or rip.

You should get one with it. I'm enjoying doing this pair!

They should be back from the powder coater on wednesday or so.

Richy persuaded me to start a Richy-a-like blog :palm: :awe:

looking on yours I can see the same acid corrosion. I wonder if it's from the rubber?

Hmm, there is some rubber on the inside lid of the Lindbergh which does a similar thing..

You could always get black or blue shaft covers if you want something that's a better match to your CP.

Then those sexy Fran washers won't be hanging as loose as the man himself :awe:
