Sega Driving Cab - STC to Initial D *new pics 17/4/11*

Post by Spectre »

Promised to take some decent pictures and put this thread up, so here it is! Bought one half of a Sega Touring Cars cab from penrhos. After a bit of consideration, have decided to convert it into a JVS driving cab for Naomi2/Triforce/Chihiro games such as Initial D, Outrun 2 and Mario Kart GP 8-)

The cab has already had all the metalwork sandblasted and powder coated, the guys penrhos used did a beautiful job. The plastics however aren't so great, but luckily my new brother-in-law is a painting and finishing expert who has single-handedly painted everything from warehouses to cars and even a fighter jet! I'm currently trying to decide on either electric blue or apple green, candy finish or pearlescent! Think mega-pimped :awe:

Testing the sanwa 29e31s monitor that came with the cab. Quite a bit of burn in unfortunately, but it'll do for now until I can tri-sync the original nanano tube.

This little beauty arrived this morning, bought from Mo (Videotronics) for a very reasonable £50 posted, took under 24 hours from payment to in my hands!

All the sega model 2 gear that came out of the cab is currently in the very capable hands of andygeezer. He is sorting the looms out for me so I get a nice neat JVS setup and testing all the model 2 hardware with a view to trading it in for various bits and bobs I'm going to need :awe:

Updates to follow!

Very nice. Looks a tidy cab already so is sure to look a gem when you've finished. Good choice going the JVS/NAOMI/Chihiro route too - nothing quite like having the original hardware in my opinion, but then I've yet to play a multi-emu cab.. ;)

Any idea how much it cost to get the black bits powder coated? I'm gonna get my two done at some point but don't want to spend a fortune!

Enjoy the ride!
Wanted:
Sega Model 3 Emergency Call Ambulance ROM board or complete Step 2 boardset.

I think penrhos said he paid £120, which seems a fairly decent price to me.

The shell cost £120 cash to have it all sandblasted (inside & out) and powdercoated matt black - I was going to follow sharkfactors emulator cab plans but due to "real life issues" don't have the time to be able to do it to the level I would be happy with.

No idea, some kind of rally car branding? :shifty: I think the cab had been converted to dirt devils or sega rally 2, as there is other evidence of non-stc artwork having been on the cab. It'll all be stripped off for repainting anyway :D

Bingo, here's a rough idea of the finish I'm aiming for:-

A few more pics, the obligatory seat back in the bath pic!

Also bought a roll of this, to go on this (waiting on new fixings then I'll show the finished product)

And, biggest win of all, this arrived today

Thanks for that - good to have a rough idea on costs for this specific cab, as I've heard powder coating prices can vary wildly!

Looks like it's gonna be a pretty original looking machine! 8-)

I found if you can get the metalwork sandblasted by one company & powdercoated by another it can somptimes work out cheaper - that's what I did with this, it takes longer and is more farting around but the powdercoaters wanted £180 to do the lot themselves.

My parts of touring cars and other stuff are in for blasting and powder coating at the same place now :D

That must of cost you a fair bit already buying the cab and all the bits. you should of got the ID twin off ebay the other week and striped one to get ya money back, lot cheaper

A single project cab was the best option for me, I don't have the room for a twin and couldn't have affoarded one upfront anyway. Also, wheres the fun in just buying a finished cab? A big part of the hobby for me is the challenge, picking up knowledge as I go along and ending up with something unique which exactly matches what I want :awe:

True, I've had to "liquidate" far more gear than I had planned to in order to fund the project, but in for a penny, in for £500.

Gawp in awe at the footplate of wonder! :awe:

Image Image

Stripped it, soaked the metalwork in rust remover overnight, cleaned up with a wire brush and metal polish. Brand new fixings and old rubber mat replaced with chequered plate stuff. Looks good enough to eat your dinner off! 8-)

A little update for today, some painting pics

Image Image
Main base board, painting with homebase "quick drying, ultra tough, slip resistant, waterproof" doorstop paint :awe: Just £2.49 for a little tin and it covers really well.

Image Image Image
A little sneak peek from the professional painter, sides and seatback being prepped and undercoated, can't wait for the finished product!
