a few weeks ago, i picked up a gutted candy 18. this is how it started:

it barely fit in the car:

... and was a bit dirty:

but it cleaned up nicely:

i had never worked on a control panel before, so i decided to make a prototype out of cardboard so i could test the button layout.
i also cut another piece to the size of a 20" lcd screen (a bit too small as it turned out), while i was at it:

then i couldn't sleep one night and downloaded inkscape. i never used a vector drawing program before, but somehow ended up with a new marquee that is supposed to resemble a mix of both styles of the original snk one and a new control panel overlay (wip):

i got some new sanwa buttons in the mail and decided to "ghetto mount" a seimitsu stick as well:

i thought i wouldn't get anything else done this year, but i scored a brand new LG L2000CP on ebay.
Panel Type: IPS
Screen size: 20.0 in
Resolution: 1600 x 1200 pixels
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Pixel pitch: 0.255 mm
Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Contrast ratio: 800:1
Viewing angle: 178º Horizontal, 178º Vertical
Response time: 8 ms
so i made something else that looks ghetto (i only had 7 of those metal pieces, btw), but it'll be painted and hidded by a bezel anyway. all i cared about was that it would be strong enough to hold the monitor, which is heavier than i thought a lcd would be.

fitted ... and since i do net yet own a cga to vga converter, i decided to hook up my dad's old pentium4 notebook and tested the monitor with final burn evolution:

to be continued.
