29E31S in F355 Challenge 2 MultiMonitor Dim/Dark Picture

Post by Bodi79 »

Hey Guys !

I am currently finishing up a Ferrari 355 Challenge 2 Multimonitor Cabinet (TriMonitor) which i ran in an issue with.

The Left Monitor has been replaced with an 29E31S-B Chassis , the others (Center and Right) are Nanao Chassis / Toshiba Tubes.

Thing is the 29E31S-B is totally dim, even adjusting the Brightness Pot near the Flyback is almost maxed out.
Aswell adjusting the Sub Contrast won´t bring near the Brightness of the Nanao´s.

I tried swapping VGA Ports which didn´t help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ronald

@grantspin

The left chassis (The Dim one) was replaced from the previous owner with an 29E31S-B Chassis / 73SX 07Y22-DC26 Tube.
Original Chassis is an MS2931/Toshiba A68LBT696X Tube (Which is still used as Center and Right Monitor)

Photos attached of the DIM Monitor aswell of the Toshibas, hope that helps.

Thanks for any advice

have you tried the cut offs,gains and sub contrast on the neck card yet?

The green image on the left monitor looks a lot like many Sanwa 29e31s monitors that I've had in the past... :( I hope that yours is correctable...

yes it could be a weak crt-extremely common with these tubes

@grantspain

Already tried every setting on the neck board previously didn´t help.

@denson

I suspected as much as well , might just be a weak tube.

Side question, i have another Toshiba A68LBT696X here with mild burn in.
Can it be used with the 29E31S Chassis?

Thanks

deflection yoke is different,es31 uses a 0.300mh yoke whereas the nanao ms293x use a 0.195mh yoke
you could try it for a few mins to see what the picture looks like and then swap the yokes-although then you would need to set the convergence etc

@grantspain

Thanks again for your help , really appreciate it !

I actually acquired three A68KJU96X Toshiba Tubes today with no Burn and wanted to replace every tube on the Ferrari.
Two MS-2931 (which Tubes had some burn-in) as well i wanted to try it on the 29E31S as you suggested with the 696X.

Really didn´t come very far im mounted the center and right monitor (on the MS-2931 Chassis) but the Horizontal Size is much to small.
I tried maxing it out in the Factory Mode of the Chassis but that didn´t help than much.

Is it an incompatability , or have i overlooked smth?

Thanks again

do you mean the sanwa chassos the nanao tube is producing this picture?
it would be an issue as deflection yoke tolerances are very different-you would need to swap the deflection yokes

@grantspain

Sorry for beeing unclear, i swapped every tube in the system with the Burn-free A68KJU96X today.

And on every chassis (even the MS-2931) i get the picture as shown.

I presume i must swap all the deflection yokes than?

Thanks

do you have an inductance meter?
that would prove what yokes are on these new tubes,i have seen this tube number used on ms9-29 chassis and that is 0.300mh-that in theory should run the es31 ok

I may be wrong, but the A68KJU Toshiba tubes were for Nanao Ms9-29su's....and are a different tube than what was coming on the 2931's you said were in the cab. I don't have the yoke impedance and resistance in front of me for either one, but I'd be they are different enough, that you cant just toss a 2931 chassis on that A68KJU Toshiba tube.

Grant will have more info there for sure, but something to consider.

I don't get it. Perhaps you are confusing tube/chassis models, perhaps some yoke was swapped.
Facts:

Sanwa 29E31S uses a .300mH type tube.
Nanao MS2931 is a different monitor, and .200mH tube.

Those Toshiba A68KJU96X / MS2931/32 etc SHOULD be = H :0.4 Ohms V:7 Ohms (and .200mH horizontal induction.)
The Toshiba tube is incompatible with 29E31S. If you have the correct .200mH yoke, you can swap the yokes carefully and get a working combination.

The 29E31S chassis wants a tube with these specs: Rh 0.6 ohms Lh 0.300mh Rv 5.3 ohms Lv 11.7mh
The MS2931 chassis wants a tube with roughly these specs: Rh 0.4 ohms Lh 0.200mh Rv 7.0 ohms Lv ??mH

Now, looking at your picture, i would deduce you have 29E31 yokes/tube on a MS2931 chassis?

Disconnect the tubes, and multimeter the ohms to get a rough indication of what yoke is on them. Then we can get an idea what's going on.
Also some pictures of the yokes themselves can help. I've seen a lot of 29E31 Shanghai Novell tubes so i'd recognize the yoke that should be on it :)

@Asure @grantspain @bagheera369

Sorry for the late reply, was on Vacation.

As already suggested earlier in the thread i only needed to swap the yokes which did the trick.
Work perfectly fine in the Nanao 2931 Chassis now.

So the middle and right Monitor are running fine with the A68LBT696X.

Only thing which still isn´t working correctly is the Sanwa Chassis (Chassis) which has the Dim/Dark Picture. (left monitor)
I replaced the Tube like the others with an Toshiba A68LBT696X but the picture is still much darker / dimmer than in the Nanao Chassis.

So i suspect the Sanwa Board itself has some issue. (Sub Contrast / Brightness etc. doesn´t make any difference really as written before).

Cheers
Ronald
