Nanao tube replacement
I've been a bit out of arcade gaming for a few years, but recently got my Egret II repaired (caps and power supply mostly). After having happily used it for a day or two, I decided it was time to play some tate games, so I rotated the monitor. Everything was fine and I could play a loop and a half of Wyvern Wings, then turned the cab off to make dinner. Suddenly a loud pffft noise came from the cap, sounding like vacum being let into the tube or something.
My first question is - what will happen if the tube has indeed cracked and I turn it on?
Second question - any ideas of where to get a replacement tube?
And I was SO happy finally having a wokring cab at home

Re: Nanao tube replacement
Leave the cab off for a while, take the rear service panel off and carefully inspect the tube neck.
It's not good practice but it won't explode or anything. If the tube has been necked it will not do anything. Don't leave it on for too long tough. My first question is - what will happen if the tube has indeed cracked and I turn it on?
It's most likely an Nanao MS9 29T Toshiba tube. I've not seen one on sale for a few years but ask here, J+ and such and you might get lucky. Most 29" MS9 tubes will fit but the bezel may not matchg the screen curvature leaving gaps.Second question - any ideas of where to get a replacement tube?

Re: Nanao tube replacement
It's cracked alright, and I know what caused it - the guy who repaired it strapped the coords down, so when I turned the screen, I didn't notice anything, but still put strain enough on it to break it after a while.
What a blunder!
What a blunder!

Dang that sucks. What I'm wondering is why would he shorten the wires?

Re: Nanao tube replacement
He didn't shorten the wires, he strapped them down, for cable management.
I'm sure he did it with the best intentions in mind

Re: Nanao tube replacement
He should have bothered with cleaning the chassis (looks incredibly dirty for a serviced chassis) instead of messing with the cables.
What a shame

That's sad indeed, and quite some facepalm for a repair; although obviously strapping the wires down has been done with the best intentions.slk486 wrote:It's cracked alright, and I know what caused it - the guy who repaired it strapped the coords down, so when I turned the screen, I didn't notice anything, but still put strain enough on it to break it after a while.

My 15kHz cabinet Peplos will never power up, with any item, and I am quite proud of that.

Grant worked on a Toshiba tube/chassis for my Egret a few months back - he even made the cables longer for me.Asayuki wrote:That's sad indeed, and quite some facepalm for a repair; although obviously strapping the wires down has been done with the best intentions.slk486 wrote:It's cracked alright, and I know what caused it - the guy who repaired it strapped the coords down, so when I turned the screen, I didn't notice anything, but still put strain enough on it to break it after a while.

(mind you, I did emphasise that it would be rotated and for an Egret 2 cab).
He's a Grand Wizard Lvl 11 now
I am sure you will find one - a few have popped up on J+ and ukvac recently.
