New Astro help needed.

Post by Bort »

Hello, ginormous pics ahead!

Picked up my first cabs before KC went tits up and have had a lot of fun learning as I tinker and fix them up.

My Egret II is pretty much finished with apart from some cosmetic things. Now I need to sort out my New Astro and there are a few things that I need a bit of help with.

Before I get to the monitor I will go over earthing the cab, it most likely has a bearing on the problems.

The New Astro hasn't been earthed yet. n00b I know.

Will it be okay to earth the cab through a uk main plug in a mains socket (with only the earth connected)?
I've multimetered both the mains socket and my step downs socket and they give almost identical readings.

I knocked this up earlier, is it okay? - http://oxtongue.co.uk/cabs/newAstroProb ... oEarth.jpg"

Whats wrong with the monitor,

#1, It bows out in the upper half of the screen. (I think Grantspain alluded to a pot that would sort this out in another thread)

#2, After a few mins of it being powered on the screen with go red (not pure red, it just looks like the red pot has been turned up quite a lot. It has only done this for the past fortnight. It has been beautiful and fine up until then.). I can tap the screen or case and it will flick back to normal for a very short amount of time then go back to red. I think this is related to the next problem.

#3, I'm not sure the monitor is earthed. The only cables coming off it are the ribbon going to the front control board under the CP and one with 9 wires connecting it to the rest of the cab.

If it isn't earthed I'd appreciate it if someone can doodle on one of the pics to show where I should put an earth wire.

I took the monitor out of the cab earlier (filthy sod) for the first time and wanted to know before I power it on or put it back in would I need to discharge it or do I only need to do that if I'm going to do work on the monitor? Also would it be okay to clean her off with a can of compressed air or would I run the risk of borking something?

I can't see any serial number on the board but the monitor says, ms9-29s, 5X07LZ-(10? Obscured) main board, 5X04LZ-3 (board on back of tube), Toshiba A68KJU96X.

Thats for the help.

p.s. No need to a new thread and there isn't really another suitable thread, do akihabarashop mark down packages? I want to order a new CP and a bunch of buttons/sticks from them.

not the best bit of wiring for the earth but it should work(ish),but my opinion you should make sure the live and neutral are completely disconnected from the plug and cut back-i would have run a earth wire to the stepdown case as its almost certainly earthed, then you could tape/cable tie it to the cab cable

nanao ms9-excellent monitor 8-)

for the bowing effect locate vr450 side pincushion adjustment, its on the main chassis

don't worry about the earth,it should be earth through the cab metal work anyway

the red is being caused by a bad solder joint which is probably on the neck card, check the drive transistors and the crt socket

i use an air compressor to clean off monitors,i just don't spray to close

Thanks for answering my questions Grant.

If you like my wiring you'll Really like my soldering skills. heh.

I'll hook everything up and try to do as much as I can without blowing myself up. Think I'll have to call on the help of my friends uncle with the dodgy solder point.

Cheers again Grant.
