Toshiba a68kju96x Degauss Cord (MS9)

Post by cless »

I just obtained a replacement toshiba tube (a68kju96x) for one of my Egret 2s that didnt have one. Tube came from a Nanao MS-2932-SF. There are two odd things about it: the red wires coming out of the degauss coil are rather short (about 6 inches long). Theyre so short they dont make it to the chassis location in the egret. Also, when i compare the degauss coil on the monitor with the one in my working Egret 2, I noticed that the degauss coil placement differs. The new monitor's coil hugs the back of the tube and is held in via zip ties (seems like factory default placement) whereas my old tube's coil is kind of sloppily held in place with electric tape on the top and bottom of the tube.

Does anyone happen to know if they made 2 different degauss coils for this tube? Or do you need to just hack up the original degauss coil a bit to make everything work in an egret (which might explain the coil placement on my other tube)?

Worst case, will splicing and lengthening the red degauss cord cause any picture issues?

The degauss circuit only comes into play when you are degaussing the screen, so it wont affect anything till you use it. The wire running around your tube is just that - a wire. It's likely someone has had cause to replace the wire. In theory you could use any degauss wire that fits.

I wouldn't want it too close to the neck as it could possibly affect any correcting strips or the purity rings. You could always pull it off and just degauss the screen when you need to with a degauss wand. It should not be something you need to do every day unless you have some other field affecting the screen nearby (a set of speakers for example)

Take a pic of it maybe?

sounds more like a coil for turning the image rather than degaussing if it is ziptied to the back of the tube, rodotron chassis for example comes with theese.
Also be sure to swap the yoke since the one from 293x is not compatible with a ms9

I glazed over the first part of the post, as the above post says, the MS-2932 is a 31k tube, you can't do a straight swap with an MS9 chassis.

So even though the tube model # is identical, the yoke's are different?

Yeah, you would need to pair the yoke from an MS9 tube with the chassis.

Maybe it is something to "turn the image" like in the Rodotron 666A?

Edit- Oops, i missed your post saying this

thats strange, the tube number has the yoke spec as part of the code-if they are identical numbers then the yoke should be the same-but this means either you have had the ms9 running on the wrong tube or the ms2932 has been running on the wrong tube

do you have a multimeter?

interesting, that may explain why the tube has burn marks on one of the connectors... ill go measure it and see what comes back.

For impedance, 6.7 ohms on the vertical, 0.6 ohms on the horizontal, which according to the wiki seems closer to the ms2932.
My other toshiba tube that came with an ms9-29T measures the same... I'll check out the inductance next.

yeah inductance is the one
0.300mh or near for ms9-29
0.195mh or near for ms2932

Toshiba tube on my original ms9 Egret reports 14.25mH for vert, 0.333mH for horiz
New Toshiba tube is reporting 14.65mH for vert, 0.210mH for horiz

How far off can the inductance be for the chassis to work properly?

it is not within tolerance

Can you not just change the yoke?

the guy i bought the tube from still had the ms2932 chassis, so I decided to go that route. Ill probably dedicate this one to naomi stuff for now, so it works out. Maybe ill attempt a yoke swap at some point later on.

A tube number like A68KJU96X doesn't have the sixth symbol that would come after the X, e.g. A68KJU96X02. When the sixth symbol isn't present the yoke isn't bonded to the tube and you can have two (or more) tubes with the same (incomplete) number but not the same yoke.

See also here (under "sixth symbol"): http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/CRT_desig ... ion_System"

The yokes on Toshiba tubes usually have a sticker with a code. That would tell you if the yokes are the same or not:
