screen burn problem

Postby neptonikboy » March 22nd, 2012, 8:00 pm

I recently moved my cab to the other side of my bedroom. When I switched it on it a had a slight pinkish screen burn down the left hand side of the screen. So I pressed the degauss button which improved it but has not completely removed it. The longer I leave the cab on the pink screen burn on the left gets worse. It's only a couple of inches wide but very annoying. Anyway just wanted to ask if anyone can help, or has any idea whats wrong?

Turn it off for a while needs to settle down before you power up after moving, magnetic fields and that.

How long should I leave it off for? It's been off all day today when I was working but when I switched it on the screen burn was still there.

Sounds like a residual magnetic field. A degaussing wand might help, but it might just be too strong an amount of interference.

Is it near any large appliances or speakers or anything like that?

Press the degauss button immediately after you power up and hold it in till it switches itself off/fades to nothing, then release it

No it's not there speakers or large appliances. I tried the degauss button about 15 mins ago and it's still the same however, I wasn't doing it immediately after powering up though. Would that make any difference?

It probably will not be at full power, degauss should only be done at power up, or it can make the problem look worse

Ah I see, that's what I was doing wrong then. Should I leave the degauss for a while, before attempting it again? (As I noticed it doesn't work if pressed too often) and should I press it when the neo geo logo comes up or before that?

Yer, It's designed to cut-out so it doesn't burst into flames.

You can wait till the Neo Geo logo appears, that way you can see the effect.

Ideally a cold start, so a few hours at least

It's funny, I decided to move the cab back to where it was originally in my room and the screen burn has gone!

For the record screen burn is when the phosphor permanently darkens (often in the shape of a title screen, 'Insert Coin' or other repeated image.)

What you have experienced here is a magnetised tube and I imagine a rainbow of colours rather than a fixed blackened image.

I have heard of this situation happening to someone before. Magnets, how do they work?

I seen this issue before with a computer CRT, the electric wiring in that particular part of your house is the issue. I bet you that if you move the CAB 2-3 feet away from the wall the problem goes away too.
