Re: Cabs and cold rooms
You could maybe hack a portable car/van heater (cigarette lighter 12vDC type) and put it inside the cab to warm it up?

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
Is it possible that you are getting condensation issues? It's a serious query as it can really screw up components and it's probably a really good idea if you are going to be running anything to use an oil burner a couple of hours before you switch anything on to raise the temperature ahead of usage.
Any moisture in the air (and you breath I assume) can condense on cooler components as they start to warm up.

Only time it becomes an issue is when there is moisture in the air and you switch the units on. Apart from high condensation when you perhaps have poor ventilation and then metal can rust. Just keep the temperature up in this **** cold weather before you switch anything on.kernow wrote:oh christ, maybe I just wont be using my cabs for a bit then, better get my pcbs out of there too. sigh.
even though I have nowhere else to put them.

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
if you get condensation bulid up around the anode then it will arc,if it flashes over then you can say goodbye to the chassis and probably the game board-as it fires 27k down ther rgb lines-possibly

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
The room where my cabs are is a bit chilly at the mo. The radiator is off because theres a Domy and a Pony in front of it
It would have to be really cold and a bit damp for a prolonged time to do any real damage though wouldn't it? Aren't we being a wee bit paranoid?

Yeah, but I also have an oil burner and a fan heater. I tend to keep the oil burning heater on overnight when it is seriously cold (like last night which was -6) or if I plan to have a shot I'll have them both running for 2 or 3 hours before I hit the on switches. A few £ here and there and probably not very "green" I admit.kernow wrote:haven't you got your cabs in a garage? I imagine that gets pretty chilly.
Bah, I can't actually move anything from that room because theres nowhere to put it. My Hifi systems in there too and thats worth more than both the cabs.![]()
Lame.

Well, if you think anyone is saying "don't touch the cabinets!" then yes, but what I am saying is get the storage space up to a temperature where water will no longer condense on components and you'll be fine.SuperPang wrote:Aren't we being a wee bit paranoid?
Heater & Dehumidifier and you'll be fine - no biggie, it's a well known issue for anyone using electronics outside (or cold climates like Scotland) and I have come across it as I used to be a member of Raynet (who provide emergency communications back ups) mainly in poor conditions such as cold, wet, freezing weather (in my experience).
I also assume that most people here were born after central heating became the norm in every house in Britain. Nobody remembers how quickly the simple act of breathing could leave your windows covered in ice each morning? Blimey, now I feel old.

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
I got recommended that putting a lamp (has to be bulb-type) inside a damp cabinet will remedy moisture issues. If you leave the lamp on that is.
60 watts or so.

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
What about some silica gell packs?
I've got a few in the garage & I would generally attempt to bring it above freezing, more for my body than the cabs, befor turning them on.
The cabs give out some heat too.
Next years project will be to insulate my garage & get a dehumidifier in there.

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
I have 2 driving cabs in the garage and it gets cold in there sometimes.
This time last year I played Ridge Racer a lot in there and was always fine. I think its if you leave them in there for storage etc that they build up moisture etc. Playing on them often and keeping the juice flowing is better than leaving them alone.
I think its a case of common sense before you switch them on. They have been around for along time our cabs and they survived this long just double check them if it VERY cold before power up
An if they do go pop just add it to the KERNOW FALIURE LIFE STORY - THE DARK YEARS, your currently writing!

Your Ridge Racer cabinet started off as a rain soaked hulk sitting in a field remember, so it has seen a damn sight worse! I wished I had taken images of the pair of them literally standing in a field under a blue rain cover (which was full of holes).tetsujin wrote:....Ridge Racer ....

You are right, just keep a bit of heat in the room ahead of using them and don't leave them for months at a time in a cold, damp space otherwise you can expect issues.

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
While we're at it why not wrap them in a shnuggly duvet and a knitted wooly hat with a wee pom-pom on top. That'll keep 'em nice 'n cozee.
I wuvs my cab this much, I gives it kisses ebery nite.
Although i liked the solution that if you have problems with your cab, best not play it at all, that'll work for my screenburn too i reckon

Re: Cabs and cold rooms
Putting a heater on for your cab...? I avoid even having heating on for myself, never mind the cab
And a dehumidifier ain't exactly a thing every home has.
But I guess if you've got money to burn, sure why not, may as well throw in the duvet and wooly hat too then ehh
