DonPachi + AWSD = Strange Video Issues

Post by gabe »

I'm experiencing strange video issues with DonPachi in my AWSD. Pretty much exactly the same symptoms described (with video) here.

Diagnosis thus far:
  • The PCB works great in my other cab
  • No cut traces that I can see
  • Plugging in the D1 & D2 connectors helps, but doesn't solve the problem
  • Adjusting V.HOLD/H.HOLD doesn't solve the problem
  • 5v is spot on
  • Other early Cave games work great in the cab
I'm stumped. What should I try next?

IIRC, the early CAVE games need you to unplug a sync cable at the bottom of the cabinet (near the floor somewhere). I'm sure someone else can give a better description.

I've tried both ways (plugged and unplugged)... No dice, though things seem to be slightly better with it plugged in.

It might also be that the PSU is acting up unless you have a stepdown that delivers 100V and not 110V to it. I think. I've never owned an AWSD, so I haven't been in this situation personally.

I am indeed using a stepdown converter, so sadly that's not the issue either...

Every other PCB I have tried in the cab works great.

Check your JAMMA harness with a multimeter, specifically all the voltages (separately). There's an issue with Egret II where one of the +5V doesn't actually provide +5V, and it causes issues with certain PCBs, like Moonwalker. Probably doesn't apply to your cab but worth a look.

I do, and the PCB works wonderfully in the other cab.

I just checked all of the voltages at the harness, and they are right where they should be.

Looks like video gnd issues to me.. :geek:
Can we get a pic of the jamma edgeconnector of the PCB and a pic of your cabs jamma connector, please.

I tend to agree with you, though everything looks to be in line to my amateur eye. At least at the jamma end of the video ground. Pics:

Fixed! Kinda. It was indeed a video ground issue. I "fixed" it by running a jumper cable from video ground (14), to ground (2):

To me, this implies that the video ground on my jamma harness is broken somewhere. Am I correct? Any tips on how I might go about chasing this down?

I'd say: No. Some boards just don't combine the gnd's. had the same issue on a Carrier Air Wing boot on my Astro City. It worked flawlessly on my old woody jamma cab.
Good work btw :) feels nice to fix boards, right? :D
