Want to phoenix my CPS2 board

Post by gargamel »

Hi folks

I own a Xmen vs Street fighter CP2 board, and i want to phoenix it.
I know Razoola can do it for few euros, but i m in Japan and sending my board to Finland is not the best solution.

How can i phoenix my board myself?

thanks

You need Phoenix roms specifically as they have had some parts patched. Normal roms won't work.

They where leaked to Mame a while back, use Google to search for "Xmen Vs Street Fighter Phoenix Edition ROM".

You'll also need to cut the battery off your board.

Thanks Devil Sounwave

when i searched in google i found this one

X-Men Vs. Street Fighter (USA 961004 Phoenix Edition)

But my board is a japanese board. Can the above romz be used?

Also, what type of Eprom Eraser does i need?

Thank you

1) Yes, you can use the USA roms as the jumpers on all versions of this game are the same.

2) Any EPROM eraser will do - look on eBay. Don't try and make one, it's a BAD idea and you'll end up blind or worse.

3) One assumes you're only Phoenixing it because the board is dead, right?

when you have phoenixed your board power the board up and you will see a logo ie capcom phoenix edition hit the test button on the side of the motherboard which will bring you to a small menu go to change region, go to JAPAN then hit button 1 on you cabinet/supergun which will save it to your motherboard then start your game now the region will be X-Men Vs Street Fighter JAPAN 961004 after i have phoenixed a game i always go into test just to make shaw the programme roms have been programmed propley even if your programmer may of said there fine you can get bad roms/read errors etc..you will after reset the boards region if you use the the motherboard for another cps2 game as the save you made for the game will be lost.there is a way to recode the phoenix roms so you can have any region on boot up ie will be japan and not usa when first powered but thats for another day:).if you are looking for a cheep eprom programmer go for a 2049 TOPS for about 70gbp can do 27c4096 eproms no problem or for about 350gbp you can get a nice dataman programmer which will last you a life time.for a Eprom Eraser get yourself a nice one and not some **** that can only clear 2 eproms in 60 mins from HK have a look on RS or CPCs websites thats where i bought most of my kit .hope this helps

If your game is working right now and you want to phoenix it then AFTER you remove the battery from the board, short the 2 leads of the electrolytic capacitor next to where the + terminal was together for several seconds. This will drain the juice left in the circuit and allow the phoenix code to operate properly.

Also, if your board ever boots to a solid color screen again you'll need to short those 2 cap leads together again. I've seen a few phoenixed carts stop working because the memory tables that were battery backed get corrupt for unknown reasons.
I'm a cheap ****. I learned to repair things to save money... even surface mount soldering!

My repair logs have moved to here. Enjoy!

Would it be an idea to remove the cap altogether and just bridge that point in the circuit with a jumper wire?

I've Phoenixed many boards for people, trouble is that I'm in the UK which doesn't really help you.

If you don't want to post it to Finland (or the UK!) or to invest in an EPROM programmer and eraser, then your best bet is to remove the relevant EPROMs and send them to Raz (contact him first of course). He will then re-program them (for a charge). I could also do the same. You would of course need to re-fit them on their return and de-solder the existing battery.

Having said all that, if you're not happy with removing the EPROMs, desoldering the battery, etc then your best option is to send just the B board to Raz or someone like myself. Channelmanic here also does them but he's in the US so not much closer to you than Raz or myself.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned - you'll need a Torx 20 screwdriver to undo the screws in the B board - do you have one?

Failing that, you can get by with a smallish flathead screwdriver jammed in at an angle... ;)

Yeah, at the risk of mashing up the torx head and then having to drill it out. ;)

If you're inexperienced. I got REALLY good at said technique.

Although some dumbass killed one of the screws on my Gradius IV board and I had to reseat a loose connector last week, this took an hour, because Konami decided that 4 screws wasn't going to be enough to hold the Hornet together. 95 sounded more like the right amount.

But I usually just go to sears anyway XD. Lifetime warranty on their tools, completely unconditional. Break it, bend it, melt it, paint over it so many times it's unusable, walk in with it, they give you another one. Period. For a 2 dollar screwdriver, that ain't bad. Especially since I've never found their tools to be of crap quality. I guess thats why they offer a real warranty on them
