I would say every 6-7 years is enought to be on the safe side. just make sure the new batteries are really new, and not years in storage.

I changed my thrid strike battery back in 2004. it's still working..

Cool! What was the brand of the battery.
Most common brand out there is the purple one, Tadiran brand.
Is Tadiran a quality battery?

I'd say every 5 years would be safe enough. Every 2-3 years just seems a bit too often for me.

5 years is fine. I recently changed one on a super turbo i picked up from an operator that still had the original battery 20 years old and hadn't been used for probably the last 10.

Those are really old! Last year I received Alien vs Predator with the original battery still installed, so that one would have been around 20 years old.

Oldest one i've seen are Sega FD1094 with lithium still rockin' since 1985.. (Shinobi pcb i recently swapped the battery on.)

I would guess the more modern batteries are of much lesser quality.

If you are not confident in soldering every 5 years like people state, get a keystone holder so you can replace the battery easily. My CPS-2 board battery must of been a minimum of 10+ before the replacement.

Keystone holders in CPS2 boards are a bad idea.

Thanks for the heads up. I've don't it on one board, which I'll replace next time battery needs to be changed.

Bumping this to alert those who got CPS2 replacement battery Tadiran model TL-5101 to REPLACE it as soon as possible.

I bought some of those batteries in 2010 and now six years later i found that 7 (seven) of my boards just suicided. Other boards with old original Maxell battery from mid 90s stored in the same room for the same time are still fully working :eh:

Time to change battery model or manufacturer since TL-5101 sold as replacement for CPS2 batteries clearly does not match the specifications of the original Maxell CPS2 battery (20 + years against only 6 years).

:(

Sheet! Sorry to hear that.

Just replaced the one in my 2X with;

Tadiran SL350/P 3.6V Lithium Thionyl Chloride

Mine's a different one? Should I check the battery for another serial number?

What would be an alternative though? Plenty of batteries from 25 year old PCBs or game cartridges are still going strong yet they were only guaranteed for 5 years in the first place. If anything more is a bonus then can you expect the same from any replacements?

I use SAFT batteries nowadays. However, Tadiran is actually a subsidiary of SAFT, so I'm not sure what to expect. One difference I've noticed is that the Tadiran-branded batteries I used previously were made in Israel. My current batch of SAFT-branded batteries are, surprisingly, marked as "Made in the UK".

Unfortunately I don't think it matters which batteries you use now - I just don't think they'll last as long as the older batteries because the older batteries probably used lead/mercury and other materials that are not used anymore for environmental reasons... In saying that, for some reason I've had great luck with blue/green B boards (Darkstalkers the most recently replaced and it was still on original battery, Super Street Fighter 2X/Turbo 3 months before that also on original battery) but all the grey boards I've come across that used the same batteries have been suicided

I'm planning to replace mine every 2-3 years just to make sure

One would have to look at the battery's datasheet. Same shape and voltage does not necessarily mean same energy storage capacity. Depending on the price there are models with up to double the amount of energy (this is expressed in mAh even for non-rechargeable batteries).
Plus, you cannot control or know how much shelf life did the battery have to go through until it came into your hands: batteries degrade with time even if never used. Capcom probably never had to worry about shelf life: they orderd tons of batteries and could therefore demand a freshly produced batch with each shipment.
Now the battery in the photo has a marking "U-JUL-10"; was that meant to be a manufacturing date or an expiry date? :problem:
Bear with me, I am not trying to say that the batteries you purchased don't suck; they probably do. I just mean to highlight that, since some things are not under your control, you could experience a similar issue even with a renown brand like Varta. :(

As xodaraP mentioned, scheduled replacement is a good strategy. Too bad it costs money and time; but hey we already know how expensive our hobby is, don't we? :D
My 15kHz cabinet Peplos will never power up, with any item, and I am quite proud of that.

One of my Grans is dead, while the other's still going. It's really odd

Did you have an autopsy to establish if one contained Lead or Mercury?

I'm not sure about dangerous metals but she definitely contained alcohol.
