Painted candys, any out there?
I'm about to paint the crusty yellowed speaker surround on my NAC and wondered, has anyone painted the whole cab a different colour ? Ive seen the surround painted black but I've only seen one pic from google where a candy cab (I think an Astro city) was painted completely black. It it looked pretty damn good !

Re: Painted candys, any out there?
I've seen a Aero City painted black that was on craigslist locally and it looked pretty terrible. But, it didn't appear there'd been a lot of care taken on the repaint.
I powder coated my Aero City CP area blue instead of stock white, but haven't touched any other parts of the cab.
I've seen plenty of instances around here of folks painting their yellowed plastics with a nice clean coat of white paint.

I got a shell of a cute that was black. I put a CRT and loom in and whatnot and painted it grey - I knew I'd never match one of the original colours exactly so picked something in a sort of matching shade. Just had a look around but I can't see a pic on here sadly.

I've got an E29 where one of the past owners painted the cab black and the surround red. It looks horrid imo. It's in for a restoration in about a year.

Man, that Smurfgret II is such an eyesore... Somewhat reminds me of these two cabs:
I'm the type of guy that prefers the original look and feel of these cabs over anything else so just can't bare to see these custom jobs people do to them.

Come on! That looks so sweet! if they were painted properly then what's the problem? the white does look very sleek in all its original glory but these look really good too. They arnt super bright colours that hurts the eyes either. I can see black and grey looking really good, or mostly dark colours

Still it's unique and I give it props! Maybe the owners favourite colour was orange ?yosai wrote:

Re: Painted candys, any out there?
To each his own. First thing I'd do if I got those would be stripping all the paint and bringing them back to normal hehe. I got in to candy cabs after seeing the Vewlix cabinet when it first launched back in '09. I instantly fell in love with it and saw it more as a piece of art rather than just something that housed a game board, monitor, and controls. Since then I've had a huge appreciation for candy cabs and treat my game room like an art gallery; wanting to know the history behind the pieces and bringing them back to the original state the creators/ artists envisioned for them. So for me, anything else is usually an eyesore.Hrvat9 wrote:Hellfromabove wrote:Man, that Smurfgret II is such an eyesore... Somewhat reminds me of these two cabs:

As far as the orange Astro goes, God only knows why they wanted it that color... Should have just gotten a Wild Riders cab lol.
Edit: Omg, just realized that's an Astro 2 as well! The horror...

Re: Painted candys, any out there?
Damn! That poor AC2I'm not very happy with the results as although Krylon Fusion paint is supposed to bond to all types of plastics, it does not bond very well to fiberglass. Also I started painting the base of the cab one month, and finished the other parts in a different month, as a result, parts came out in different shades of orange because of the tempreture changes!
