The Search for Candy

So, I've recently intensified my effort to add a candy cab to my collection. I want to first thank the community here, without whom I very well might have come home with a cab that was a little high on price with some issues. I could read in my mind how the responses would play out if I were to post pictures of the cab, with the excessive burn on the monitor, and with other potential issues.

At any rate, I wanted to share the experience, and start a documentary of my effort, which I am ever so much hoping will be short-lived one. :ryu:

Made the tip about 2 hours north after talking to a guy with multiple candy cab postings on ebay. The prices are a bit high, but I figured it was worth seeing what he had. I had no idea what I was getting into. At the end of the day, I came home empty. My intent is to get a JAMMA cab. He had mostly JVS cabs. Of the 3 blast city's he had, all in decent physical condition, one of them had significant monitor burn. And, of course, that's the only one that had a working monitor. My desire is to get, at a minimum, a mostly working cab. The monitor has to be good. I've got to many projects going on at the moment, I don't want to take on the can of worms that monitor seems to always be in candy cabs. I couldn't get past the burn-in and other general mediocrity of the one working monitor, and so, the search continues.

I was kicking myself on the drive home for not making an effort to rescue and strike a deal on that lonely blue CPS-2 board out in the middle of no man's land (last picture).

These pictures truly are just the tip of the iceberg. This warehouse was packed. There was an egret II next to the astro city's, but he was wanting way more than my budget for it. He was also offering a Lindbergh, but again, outside of my budget, and not JAMMA (making it more outside of my budget.

I'm sure there are some rare gems back in the darkest depths that I didn't even get a glimpse of.

Wow. I feel your pain though. Good luck on your searches! :)

You can make an NNC play jamma games. The tosh tri-sync is a great monitor too. Probably a bit late now, but I wouldn't rule them out.

What I would say though, buy the best cab you can. Replacement parts are starting to get very expensive. It's well worth paying top dollar at the start with no additional outlays.

Out of interest, how much was the E2?

Thanks for the advice, markedmiller. That is my mindset too. I was thinking about it more last night, getting that itch "I'll run back up there, make an offer on all 3 blast city's, get him to throw in some spare parts...". But then I re-convinced myself, I don't have the space or the desire to take on that level of a project and I have too many projects and small things on my various cabs needing attention. 6 months down the road, a year down the road, maybe I'll be ready to take on a greater "whole-cab (or -cabs)" project. But yeah, for now I want something that is going to be plug n play. I learned that lesson from my Donkey Kong - over 6 months and lots of energy once I determined to replace the monitor in it...I'm in no hurry to repeat that.

He was asking $1100 for the Lindbergh and $2k for the E2. I didn't see either one working. The E2 looked pretty clean from the outside. I didn't even get a look at the Lindbergh.

There are literally (20) of them there. I was thinking NC or NNC will be next, but I only have enough budget for one cab at the moment and the only JVS hardware I have now is a NOAMI w/ a CVS1 cart, which I don't have a lot of interest in playing. Again, I'd rather hold out for a good JAMMA investment first and not deal with having to source a JVS-to-JAMMA converter, and all that fuss.

Maybe I'm being a bit of a primadonna with my approach, but I want what I want. :fastlove: I appreciate where you're coming from, though. :thumbupright:

An markedkiller78 point out, NNC have a tri-sync monitor so adding a jamma wiring is pretty simple.
Honestly, if you have a basic soldering skills you can make an adapter by yourself, no need for any external hardware/converter.
On the plus side, a NNC is a more recent cabinet which mean you get a "younger" monitor/chassis.

Yes, KC.

^Any instructions out there on how to make the adapter?

The harness is something similar to this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Capcom-Sega-Japanese ... 2158021378

But maybe you will need to change some connectors, i'm not sure since I have a NUC.
But there is no need to convert the buttons/joystick from parallel to serial (JVS USB connector) then back from serial to parallel with an adapter.

Thought you might have been talking about KC. His cabs usually are priced higher and not in the best of conditions from other stuff you might find out there. I stopped dealing with him for various reasons. My advice with KC is if you need something urgently and you don't mind the price/ condition, then pick it up. I usually wait for my stuff though as I'm not in a rush to get something like an E2 and definitely am not looking to spend $2000 on it. If there's something you're really looking at picking up, lmk, I might know someone who is looking to get rid of a cab at a decent price.

Yeah, I feel like I got a reasonable/fair deal on my Aero, but it is definitely a "buyer beware" situation - non-JAMMA harness, everything open and locks in the locked postion with no keys. It's the little things you dont' think about when you're in the heat of the deal and focusing on the bigger things (like control panel, monitor working and overall condition). :wtf: He tried to raise the price $100 right as we were sealing the deal, but fortunately my buddy was with me and had a stack of neo carts in his hand which he had rummaged while I was elbows deep in the Aero and haggling. We made it a bundle deal for that extra $100. :D

Anyhoo, thank you much for the offer. At the moment, my wife has made it very clear that no new cabs come in without an equal quantity leaving. :problem: But, if I reach a point that I'm in need of more I will definitely reach out to you. :)

Oh man, the no keys thing or drilled locks always kills me. Especially sucks when you've got a deluxe cab that you need to get in to and don't want to ruin the integrity of the cab. That's definitely his trademark. Glad you got a good deal on the Aero though, shouldn't be a huge hassle adding in a JAMMA harness in again.

Didn't you purchase a few Naomi Net City cabs off CL some time back? How did those turn out? Did you end up keeping them?

I made a JAMMA harness using the stock fingerboard. Desoldered the mah jongg harness and soldered in a JAMMA harness.

That wasn't me that got those net city's. There is a thread here somewhere by that member...I think it was last left off that he was having trouble with the monitors.

Ah got it, my mistake.
