Tokyo for a few days......

Post by swisstoni »

I will be in Tokyo for a few days from this weekend before moving onto Osaka and Hiroshima. Could anyone please recommend any arcades worth visiting in the Akihabara area populated with retro games in Astro Ciry/Blast City candy cabs. Also I plan on visiting Super Potato but heard its on the expensive side, can anyone recommend any other retro shops that maybe worth a visit. Many thanks.

I think the more reasonable priced shops can be found in Den Den Town these days. Might as well skip that part in Tokyo and concentrate on the arcades (which aren't as good in Osaka).

Hey Swisstoni,

Check out the arcade map here: http://www.arcadeuniverse.net/arcade-map/

Japan has plenty of options on the map in that area. There links to the arcade websites as well to check this site and/or their location and you can check if they still exist or not. Hope this helps finding your way around.

Have fun!

There is a sweet retro game center at the start of the shopping strip near the peace memorial in Hiroshima. Also awesome okonomiyaki diagonally across from there too.

Den Den Town I found to be pretty rad too...

go to mikado arcade - get of the train at takadanobaba station theres and osamu tezuka (astro boy, jungle emperor leo) mural at the exit go left and left again follow the train tracks (should be directly on your left) and its down the street the winds up to the right about 2-3 mins walk max

as was said denden in osaka is much better than akihabara in tokyo the potato there was much better stocked when i was there last year. mandrake has crazy stock of just about everything and theres the nakano broadway further out if you go to mikado its not too far from that on the train much better than akihabara (its a shopping mall with lots of small independent retailers and the big mandrake shop in aki split into individual units for specific things (got my copy of recca there and the only place i seen it in all the shops i went to in japan) when you leave nakano station you should be in a small square go directly across to the covered shopping arcade, walk through this its a straight line at the end is broadway

if you want a late night drink in tokyo theres a place i found called one drop cafe its open until about 2am try the house sake its pineapple flavour and one of the best i had when i was there also

if i could recommend anything to do in the whole of japan it would be go to kanazawa, had the best food there from a place right next to the modern art museum its in the lonely planet guide book, i got told they were full twice but insisted on waiting the second time and glad i did (they have menus in english but try to downplay that if you go to the door and its busy, just say you are happy to wait)

also if you're bargain hunting go into every book off/hard off you see found some insane things in those places and lots of famicom stuff i didn't see even in the big stores like potato and mandrake and the prices were 1/3-1/2 or what those places were asking

Hope you had a great time.

Really itching to go again this year, but everything seems to be conspiring against me at the moment.
