Re: New Jamma game - SKYCURSER
The game looks interesting but I can't help feeling that the whole custom hardware thing is simply an ego-trip. I think the fact there's a development blog with perfectly crisp captured screenshots, (underpowered) hardware specs known and it's being advertised as an hobbiest indy on a "standard" engine is severely dampening any enthusiam I could muster for it.
A little mystery would go a long way - poorly photographed screenshots, a blog that doesn't stretch back years and detail changes, a development team with experience...
That said, it is cheap for an arcade release.

Re: New Jamma game - SKYCURSER
What custom hardware?
When someone says he made a JAMMA PCB, I want an FPGA based system with custom GPU and SPU. CPU doesn't matter it has not much impact to the soul of a game nowadays. Everything on one nice PCB and no glued on JAMMA adapter with a shelf mini PC.
Underpowered for 15khz? It's a 1.6Gigahertz PC thingy? It's "100x" more powerful than SH3 or so...

$110 for shipping. Uhh, no thanks.
So what did he say? I would guess the hardcore Shmups crowd won't be super impressed by it.pulstarx wrote:Trap15 has access to it in a private arcade and "reviewed" the game on shmups discord server.

I've not seen the final innards but "custom" is a bit of a stretch on what seems to be the case aye.
The shipping put me off entirely. The chassis likely triples the weight.

He ripped it a new one...nem wrote: So what did he say? I would guess the hardcore Shmups crowd won't be super impressed by it.
I don't consider this game a shmup at all. It's an action game with 90% of the time you will use 2 melee weapons (shotgun+katana).

Do you have a link to the review, or the text you can paste somewhere? I'd be interested in having a read.pulstarx wrote:He ripped it a new one...nem wrote: So what did he say? I would guess the hardcore Shmups crowd won't be super impressed by it.

I don't really want to post this here. I haven't played the game and don't want to **** on those guys parade.
It's not a proper review either, just some ranting.

Some people hate Neo XYX and I love it so I'll judge this when I've played it. I'll post a review here. Whether you fancy the game or not, surely new JAMMA hardware is a good thing.

Here is a pic of the used PC. Seems to be just a JPAC clone adapter with a PC.

Re: New Jamma game - SKYCURSER
I was really anticipated for the launch of SKYCURSER. But with it's current price tag and those first impressions of trap15... I'll hold off for the time being.

Re: New Jamma game - SKYCURSER
What else do you expect to find inside?
The game's built on GameMaker. There's bound to be some cheap PC inside. Add a JPAC clone and voila, "all new professional hardware platform Airframe"
(For the record, a lot of good games are made on GameMaker.)

Re: New Jamma game - SKYCURSER
I don't see a big issue with those innards, it's a small team and why develop a PC like system when you can just use a PC.
But they should be more open about it. I was under the impression it was supposed to be custom hardware which would have justified the price more.

If it's encased in a metal box it's usually a PC. Example: Lindbergh, Type-X, Deathsmiles 2, Ringedge/Ringwide.
