Defining an arcade game

Post by Svovl »

How would you define an arcade game?

What would you think of this definition?
A game where no state beyond a potential high-score is saved between play sessions

A game which is designed to beat you.

...and quickly.
The opposite to slutty home games of today.

I still regard a challenging skill based game where I die a lot as arcade style. I'd call super hexagon an arcade game even though it already got my money up front.

FarmVille is designed to keep taking money to keep playing but it's not an arcade game.

True, but not frustrate you enough to stop feeding it with coins :-)

Modern games don't have to care about frustrating you since you've already fed it around 240 quarters before you even start playing!

A game which you can play in short bursts and feel just as satisfied as if you were to have played a non arcade game for much longer

Anything which feels longer than it actually is always gets my vote :awe:

Which are?

An arcade game is like pornography. You know it when you see it.
