Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
I'm having problems with my audio output on the Vogatek Supergun, this is my current setup:
[Vogatek Output] -> Stereo TRS -> [2 x Monitor Speakers (Genelec)] 2 x XLR (unbalanced)
The sound is VERY noisy with a distinct hum, would balanced cables solve this? Can anyone please point me in the direction of Stereo TRS to 2 x Balanced XLR cables if this is the case?
Alternatively, I vaguely remember seeing SCART cables that accepted stereo in (using TRS) on one end of a SCART to SCART cable. Has anyone seen any of those for sale?
Thank you.

You're aware that [Vogatek Output] == speaker-level audio, right?
This is almost certainly the source of your problem. Get a line-level converter or turn your PCB's volume pot all the way down.

I'm aware of the audio levels but turning the PCB's pot down doesn't make a different to the signal to noise ratio for me.Korszca wrote:You're aware that [Vogatek Output] == speaker-level audio, right?

I'm also using active monitors which should be able to handle line level input with no problems.

Ah, see, you're the first one to actually know something about the different level (though in fairness I should have picked up on that when you mentioned XLR cables as part of your setup) - most run into this problem because they try to connect the Vogatek to cheap PC speakers.
Sadly, I don't know where to find those cables (I straight up couldn't find a Stereo TRS to 2x balanced XLR and SCART cables are hard to come by in stores for an American like myself).
And to make matters worse, it's very possible that your issue isn't one of cabling. Vogateks are not known to be top quality superguns so it's quite possible that your issue is contained to the sgun itself.

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
I've found and bought a balanced stereo TRS to 2 x XLR cable, hooray
I'll report back here, once it arrives, to let you guys know if it solved the problem.
If the problem is the vogatek itself, I will require some advice on what supergun I should purchase as a replacement!

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
It appears that the supergun is at fault.
I now possess, and have tested the audio with:
1 x Mono TRS to XLR [Balanced]
1 x Stereo TRS to 2 x XLR [Balanced]
Both the mono and stereo mode produce a very loud hum instead of game audio.
How shall I proceed with sending the vogatek back?

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
supergun could be faulty, but afaik all it does is take the mono speaker +/- from the edge connector and puts it out through a mono 3.5mm jack socket.
I've a few boards that hum (especially bootlegs) just because they use a crappy little amp.
JAMMA is also designed just to power a single 8 ohm speaker directly, so if that isn't what you're loading it with you could be generating problems on that side of things.

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
Perhaps I should record the sound it makes and upload it somewhere? It really is dreadful, not just some tiny hum that can be ignoredI've a few boards that hum (especially bootlegs) just because they use a crappy little amp.
This is a Hyper Neo Geo 64 board, brought brand new. The bootleg problem shouldn't apply, hopefully.
It sounds like noise produced from leaking capacitors. That would be my guess anyway, but I'm probably way off base.supergun could be faulty

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
problem could be the hyper neo using the mvs style sound output?

depends what motherboard revision and how your DIPs are set.

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
It's the second revision of the fighting board.depends what motherboard revision
It is also worth noting that the vogatek sound output worked fine in mono when I first received the board but has since degraded. I probably should have mentioned that before, sorry.
How would the DIPs affect the sound?

Re: Vogatek Supergun MK4 - Audio out problems.
IDCHAPPY sent me out a replacement (free of charge) which arrived today.
The sound is now working correctly without the loud hum. All is good once again.
Thanks goes to him and to those who offered help solving this problem.
