Decided to have a go at compiling my own mame, downloaded Mame Compiler 64, MinGW, a high score diff for 0.156 and the groovymame diff for 0.156.
applied the hi diff, all ok, applied the GM diff, all ok, pressed 'go' and it starts doing stuff but then throws an error:
<built in>:0:0:internal compiler error; illegal instruction
and then stuff about filing a bug report...
anyone any idea where i am going wrong?

ignore - managed to do it on a VM on my Mac - still don't know what the initial problem was though...
