A retro-racing set-up - advice needed....

Post by chubsta »

I have just treated myself to a racing chair and steering wheel for my 360, and love it!

Image

Next step is to get it hooked up to some emulation and finally play al;l those old racers i used to love when i was a kid. games i really, really, REALLY want to play are:
Daytona
Sega Rally
Hard Drivin
Ridge racer
Virtua Racing
Turbo
Chase HQ
OutRun

So, in a nutshell, how do i go about this?
Is there a 'one-stop' emu that will play them all, or will i have to use different ones? If different ones, then will a single decent GUI allow easy switching?
What spec will i need - i know it is no use going Quad-Core for Mame stuff, but would other emulators benefit from this? What graphics-card etc (I use Macs so have no idea about such things)

Basically, if anyone has done this can they give me some advice to save me spending hours and hours trawling through 2-year old websites looking for answers.

Any advice greatly appreciated....

nice looking setup. :awe: Is a JTAG xbox360 a possibility? Would certainly be easier for you.

i have looked into jTagd 360s but cant really justify it - the one in the picture is flashed and i have just spent an annoying couple of hours reflashig it to the latest fw so dont want to get a jtag one and find i cant update it...

plus, i think emulation would give me a better range of the classics that i really want to play..

And, probably most importantly, the Mrs may start asking questions if she sees yet another 360 turn up to add to the 2 in the living room and one in the gamesroom...

Ooookay, as advice is not really forthcoming :wtf:

would this be a decent setup for the price, or would it be overkill/underpowered?:

I was implying running MAME on a JTAG, probably not the best solution but it would be pretty straightforward.

No idea about the PC spec or the emulators.

There's no Nebula(Sega Model 2 emu) for 360 so Daytona,Sega rally,Indy 500,Over Rev and Super GT 24hr are off the menu. That's not to say it wont happen eventually, just dont hold your breath :)
Virtua Racing is pretty much perfect in MAME though and Ridge Racer 1,2 and Rave, with a decent spec, are passable in the vivanonno emu,an old emu that only had one release and never worked on thereafter.Such a shame :( I can't believe nobody picked it up and developed it further as it ran pretty good for an initial release.
You could also run the Playstation Ridge Racer in ePSXe on PC.
The PC you linked to is similar spec to the one running these emus in my driver cab,I'd go with that....**** 360 :awe:

Im running PC only on my little racing setup....shizzle like

OR2 coast to coast PC
Sega Rally2 PC
Nebula...all model2 racing games :awe:
Mame...virtua racing, outrun, power drift, chase hq ...etc

Problem is calibration on mame and trying to get near to the original's feel...difficult as there were quite a few steering mechs used at the time.
After a bit of tweaking got it to where im happy with the setup... :)

PC Spec wise im running a core2duo, one of the lowest spec's!! 4gb of ram and a low profile 512mb ati gp

May have to up that once model3 gets up and running in full...
For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!
