Lagless alternatives to CPS2 in Mame? :palm:

Post by Akuma »

Ever since I heard about lag in Mame, it was like I couldn't be bothered but after reading about ShmupMame which Emph posted, I kinda got paranoid.

So I wonder if there are CPS2 emus that are as lagless... Is Nebula better? Since it does CPS1, 2 and Neo geo, it'd be perfect for my needs (in case it works with a frontend like Hyperspin) :palm: Is anyone into this?

Shmupmame hacks out lag that is present on original hardware... MAME itself isn't inherently laggy depending on your setup.

I've got a lagless cps2 setup too. Fully jamma compatible too. :awe:

Try Final Burn Alpha/GGPO, bit more straightforward to setup

Erm... the funny thing is that I don't witness any lag and it plays perfectly fine BUT I am easily getting paranoid and after reading Emph's post... well, think of me as a hypochondriac when it comes to arcade tech... :palm: What is nagging me is the uncertainty - that there MIGHT be a lag that I am not even aware of since I don't got real CPS2 / CPS3 hardware to compare... :palm:

I guess that's the point where this starts to get philosophical - if there is a lag that no one realises, is there really a lag?? :eh:

I don't know whether there's input lag in the CPS2/CPS3 games specifically but there's certainly input lag in many games in MAME that isn't there in the originals. This is not the same as lag because your PC isn't fast enough... it can't be fixed with a faster PC.

It doesn't seem to be inherent to MAME, the amount of input lag differs from driver to driver (from 0 to up to 7 or something). For example, I have four frames of input lag in one of my favorite games, Super Punch Out!! It makes it significantly more difficult later in the game and some techniques are very difficult to do.

Interesting topic

For the street fighter games, I did notice the most input lag when using mame.
I recommend to try out the CPS-3 emu or ggpo for less input lag.

I also did read recently about tweaking the USB polling rate to decrease input lag in emulators.
However I have not tried this out myself yet, so I can’t verify if this helps.

This whole input lag issue was one of my main reasons to start out collecting the original
arcade SF games recently. So far I have SF2 CE and SF2 HF cps-1 and a SFIII 2nd impact cps3 kit.

Personally I do notice a slight difference when I emulate above games. The original games feels more responsive.
IMO when you want to play the SF games seriously, it’s well worth to consider to invest in the original arcade games.
