I guess it depends on what system you have, but in regards to modern PCI-E I would opt for an Nvdia.
Had a few ATi cards that had hardly any video modes that worked. Nvidia has a good compatibility list.

Old topic now I know, But worth noting ASDV2 has the option for stero or mono output.
