Re: JP CPS2 with English Test Menu?

Early CPS2 titles are like that. That's the same service menu they used on later CPS1 games on all regions (CPS Dash titles, like "The Punisher", "Cadillacs and Dinossaurs" and "Slammasters" for example).

A lot of them also don't have program ROM checks.

Re: Dip switches while on?

Changing dip switch configuration while the game is running won't hurt the board at all. *BUT* most games only read them once at boot time so it won't make effect until the board is power cycled. Some games do read dip switch continually though. Some even use toggling the service mode dipswitch inga...

Re: Magic sword Original Version ROM

Considering how graphic faults are so specific to certain areas of the game I'd say one of the graphic mask roms are bad. I would test the game without one of them, checking each time which make the faulty graphics fully disappear when removed.

Re: Anyone have a Kabuki programmer for my dead Three Wonders?

The battery used at the C-Board on CPS1/CPS1 dash is much better, very unlikely to leak, contrary to the big battery on CPS dash sound board (kabuki) or CPS2 which leak fairly often.

I wouldn't mind using a battery backed CPS-B-21 but I would get rid of the kabuki battery...

Yes, remember that I decrypted them so we could load it on the CPS2 multi to listen to the music on some CPS2 game soundtest?

Also I patched some ZN1/2 sound roms for them to work with the CPS2...

I'm ok with uploading them to the Avalaunch site, of course... :awe:

Re: Ghouls'n Ghosts US 1st rev. PPU issue ? (SOLVED)

I'm glad you solved it! Congrats! As this didn't get caught by a ROM check, it means the contents of this memory are probably not accessible by the cpu. Which also makes me think on how the map of tiles for each level gets read directly in hardware without cpu intervention. Interesting design. Capc...

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 with partial sound

I think the newer William systems with the SHARC DSP (Wolf board with MK III for example) can but the early ones with the OKI ADPCM chip can't. Your game has a OKI M6295 ADPCM sampler for voices at the sound board. Two EPROMs connect to it and hold the wave data. The third rom holds the program for ...

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 with partial sound

It's possible that you have one or two faulty op amps. The FM sound synth works but you get no voices? Could also be the eprom which stores the sound samples for the adpcm sampler circuit.

Re: C&D De-suicide?

I have a decrypted sound program rom (the kabuki CPU you can keep onboard as it works as a regular Z80 if not programmed) which doesn't need double size eprom and botch wire.
The patched 68k program roms you can find at the dead battery society website.

I'm pretty sure MK needs -5v, but I thought there was no sound at all without it?

I believe it's used for the op amps on the analog part. Without it I believe you get pops and weird distortion instead of normal sound.

Don't williams hardware require -5v be present for the sound to work properly?

They are not interchangeable (as in their combination with the games) but they are sure interchangeable between boards. They're different on register addressing order and plane priorities. They're the actual copy protection of the system. not talking about the other PALs present on the B board :D T...

Re: SF2 World Warrior A board - sound cutting out

If you have a chip programmer, yours might already do it.

I think only cheaper stuff like Willem won't test TTLs and SRAM.

CCX is just a power bypass capacitor. Usually it missing is not enough to cause a fault.

look a photo of the A board from a CPS1.5 game. Look which chips are missing, those will be the sound parts you need to check.

Re: SF2 World Warrior A board - sound cutting out

Only way is removing it and testing it at an IC tester which can test SRAM. Or you can just swap it out with a known good chip. It's your regular vanilla 6116 2KB 8bit SRAM.
